By Colin Harris Record-Courier staff writer WARREN — Windham’s bid for a return to the Warren Division IV District final fell short Tuesday with a 76-42 loss to Vienna Mathews in a district semifinal contest. With the victory, Mathews will take on Maplewood in the district final. Maplewood earned its spot after defeating Mogadore in Tuesday night’s other semifinal game. From the opening tip, it was clear the senior-laden Mustangs were playing with a different intensity level than the young Bombers. Mathews started the game on an 11-3 run and never looked back, as Windham struggled to get any closer than five points of the Mustangs’ lead. Mathews senior forward Corey Lumley chipped in six points during the vital first quarter, finishing with 14 for the game. Lumley is one of five seniors in prominent roles for Mathews, while only one senior, forward Jesse Burns, dresses for the Bombers. “I think that Mathews is an example of a team with a lot of seniors who know that this is their last chance,” said Windham head coach Marty Hill. “This is basically their year, and we knew that they’d do everything they could to make sure their season continued.” The Mustangs blew the doors off of what was a seven-point game at the end of the first quarter, outscoring the Bombers 20-9 over the course of the second period. Lumley, Shane Link and Chris Morgan — all seniors — each scored six points during the stretch to effectively put Windham’s hopes to rest. Morgan, a 6-foot 5 forward, was trouble for the smaller Bombers all evening long, scoring a game-high 17 points, while pulling down 10 rebounds. “(Mathews) has a big guy and that’s caused us trouble all season long,” said Hill. “We’re just a smaller team and having someone in there with his size was a definite advantage for them.” The Bombers were guided all game by a pair of freshmen. Guard Matt Knight and forward Tyler Pennington combined for 27 points and their play provided Hill with hope for the future of the program. “We’re very proud of the way these kids have performed this season,” said Hill. “We told them that they’ve come a long way this year through hard work and the play of some of our young kids is a good thing going forward.” WARREN DIVISION IV DISTRICT SEMIFINAL MATHEWS 76, WINDHAM 42 (At Warren G.
