Associated Press DORAL, Fla. — They call him the Big Easy because of a graceful swing that looks as if it requires so little effort. Ernie Els worked harder than ever Sunday to win the CA Championship. Two years without a victory — the longest drought of his career — and playing with all the pressure against a South African protege whom he helped groom for such a stage, Els played the final 23 holes without a bogey on the Blue Monster and closed with a 6-under 66 for a four-shot victory over Charl Schwartzel.
Pacquiao dominates Clottey for decision ARLINGTON, Texas — Fighting on the star, Manny Pacquiao showed once again why he is the star. With the biggest fight crowd in the U.S. in 17 years cheering him on at Cowboys Stadium, Pacquiao dominated a strangely passive Joshua Clottey from the opening bell Saturday night to retain his welterweight title and cement his status as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. The fight wasn’t close, and it was never in doubt. It was so one-sided that those in the cheap seats among the crowd of 50,994 could tell without even looking at the giant video screens over the ring that Pacquiao was in total command. One ringside judge gave Pacquiao every round, while the two others gave him all but one. The Associated Press scored it a shutout for the Filipino sensation.
Tomlinson signs 2-year deal with Jets NEW YORK — The New York Jets signed running back LaDainian Tomlinson to a two-year contract Sunday, adding an aging star to an offense that ranked No. 1 in rushing last season. Tomlinson’s agent, Tom Condon, confirmed the deal Sunday night. Tomlinson spent Friday with the Jets, capping it with dinner with coach Rex Ryan, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and other team officials. The 2006 NFL MVP was cut last month by San Diego, chose New York over Minnesota after visiting the Vikings on Thursday. The Jets went after Tomlinson hard despite the fact he turns 31 in June and is coming off his least productive season. He’s expected to back up Shonn Greene, who became the starter after Thomas Jones was released last week.
North Carolina, UConn lend big names to NIT field NEW YORK — North Carolina and UConn are lending some serious star power to the NIT. The Tar Heels were a No. 4 seed in the bracket released Sunday, the second time in the past three years that the defending national champion missed the NCAA Tournament. Florida also played in the NIT in 2008 after winning the title. It was the first time that North Carolina (16-16) missed out on the big party since 2003, but it certainly wasn’t unexpected. The Tar Heels lost 10 out of 12 games during a midseason swoon, and were beaten by Georgia Tech in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. Connecticut (17-15) is the other blueblood relegated to the NIT, also picked as a fourth seed after making the Final Four last season. Comments
