Special to the Record-Courier The Kent State Golden Flashes keep making noise on the mats, with senior Danny Mitcheff (133) and sophomore Dustin Kilgore (184) advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships that began on Thursday. Meanwhile, KSU sophomore Brendan Barlow (285) has one victory under his belt following Session I of the NCAA Championships at the Qwest Center. Session II on Thursday was not completed by press time. Kilgore trailed Cornell’s Steve Bosak 3-0 in the second period, before battling back for a 6-5 victory. Kilgore (34-1) converted a pair of single-leg takedowns in the second period to tie match at 4-4. He then hit a reversal early in the third and hung on for the one-point victory. Mitcheff (31-3) was dominant in his round of 32 win over Stanford’s Justin Paulsen. In a 12-1 major decision, Mitcheff jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one with a single-leg takedown and a two-point turn on an arm bar. He added a takedwon in the second and two more in the third. Barlow topped Cornell’s Joshua Arnone 3-2 in the pigtail round. With the scored 1-1 in the third period, Barlow spun behind Arnone, picked him up and dropped him to the mat for the pivotal takedown with 20 seconds remaining. In his round of 32 match, Barlow drew defending national champion Mark Ellis of Missouri and fell 5-3 in overtime. Ellis led 3-2 late in the third, before being pushed backwards for the final 10 seconds to give Barlow a stalling point. However, Ellis converted an inside single leg in sudden victory. Redshirt sophomore Ross Tice (165) dropped a 3-1 decision in overtime to Lehigh’s Brandon Hatchett. Hatchett worked his way around Tice with 25 seconds remaining in sudden victory. Redshirt freshman Keith Witt (174) fell to No. 6 seed Mike Benefiel of Oklahoma State 8-0 in the round of 32. Witt kept things interesting in the third period, nearly hitting a head-and-arm.
