Indians minor leaguer suspended for steroid use

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Two Dominican Summer League players have been suspended following positive tests for steroids under baseball’s minor league drug program, one getting a 100-game ban for a second offense.

Chicago Cubs outfielder Gregorio Robles has tested positive twice for a banned performance-enhancing drug. His 100-game suspension will begin with the start of the 2010 season.

Cleveland Indians pitcher Jeffry Cleto was banned 50 games for a first offense and will also start his suspension at the opening of the season.

Major League Baseball said Thursday both players tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol.

Browns re-sign

lineman Yates

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns have re-signed offensive lineman Billy Yates.

Yates, who was an unrestricted free agent, was signed by the Browns last September. He spent five seasons with the New England Patriots before coming to Cleveland.

Yates played in seven games for the Browns last season. He has made 11 starts and appeared in 32 career games.

Nathan to test elbow

this weekend

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan will play catch this weekend as he tries to decide if he can pitch with a torn ligament in his right elbow.

The Twins were intentionally vague about the plan for Nathan to test it this weekend. Manager Ron Gardenhire says he doesn’t want it “to become a media circus.”

Tests showed a torn ulnar collateral ligament on March 9.

Willis takes early lead in Tampa

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Garrett Willis made the most of a sponsor exemption to his hometown event Thursday with five birdies on the back nine for a 6-under 65 that put him atop the leaderboard among early starters in the Transitions Championship.

Another surprise came from Jeff Maggert.

Maggert was the seventh alternate at one point, and was home in Houston clearing out dead palm trees when he decided Wednesday night he should at least show up at Innisbrook. Just his luck, Vijay Singh withdrew with a back injury.

Maggert had a 4-under 67 and was in the group two shots behind with defending champion Retief Goosen, Jonathan Byrd and PGA Tour rookie Rickie Fowler.

Toyota sign could loom over Wrigley

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs owe much of their identity to two factors — their 101-year drought without a World Series title and Wrigley Field.

The Cubs and automaker Toyota are working out a sponsorship deal that could put the company’s logo on a sign hoisted above the left field bleachers.

It’s a way to increase revenue for the Cubs under new ownership. It could also make baseball purists cringe.

Nuggets coach Karl misses sixth game

DENVER — Denver Nuggets coach George Karl is skipping his team’s game against the New Orleans Hornets on Thursday night as he continues intensive treatment for neck and throat cancer.

This is the sixth game Karl has skipped since announcing a month ago that he’d been diagnosed with cancer. He has three weeks left in his treatment.

Karl was on the bench for the Nuggets’ win over Washington on Tuesday night but didn’t speak with reporters before or after the game so as to preserve his voice and strength.
