Five keys for KSU vs. Illinois

1. GANG REBOUND — Illinois is 3-to-5 inches taller than Kent State at every position in the front-court. Tyree Evans and Rod Sherman need to help on the defensive boards, and the rest of the Flashes have to get a body on Tisdale and Davis to limit their second-chance opportunities.

2. STOP McCAMEY — Get back and stop the ball. McCamey can inflict a whole lot of damage in transition.

3. ATTACK THE BASKET — The Illini may be big, but they are not particularly tough. KSU has been able to score in the paint against bigger teams like Pittsburgh this season. Attacking the basket means getting to the foul line. Opponents have enjoyed an free-throw advantage against Illinois all year long. The Illini have only gone to the foul line 555 times. Kent State has been to the foul line 748 times.

4. THE TRANSITION GAME — Kent State needs to run whenever the opportunity prevents itself, especially the bigs. The Flashes can’t match the size of Illinois’ front line, but they can outwork the Illini at the center and forward positions, taking advantage of speed and athleticism at those positions by beating them down the floor.

5. CLOSE OUT — Illinois is a jump-shooting team. All five players on the court will almost always be able to hit from the perimeter. Kent State needs to get out and contest those jumpers. One big key will be rotating off of screens to take away pick-and-pops by Tisdale, Davis and Griffey.
