Guzman OKs trade from Nationals to Rangers: Infielder Cristian Guzman is heading to the first-place Rangers from the last-place Nationals in a deal that sends two minor league pitchers to Washington. “It’s not an official trade until the paperwork goes through. In 24 hours, it’ll be official,” Washington general manager Mike Rizzo said Friday, before the Nationals hosted the Philadelphia Phillies. The Rangers have been busy ahead of Saturday’s deadline for non-waiver trades, also adding ace Cliff Lee from Seattle, third baseman Jorge Cantu from Florida, and catcher Bengie Molina from San Francisco. The Guzman deal comes a day after Rangers All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin. Guzman needed to OK the move because players with at least 10 years of major league service, including five consecutive years with their current club, cannot be traded without their consent.

Arizona sends P Jackson to White Sox: The Arizona Diamondbacks traded away an All-Star pitcher for the second time in a week on Friday, sending right-hander Edwin Jackson to the Chicago White Sox for rookie Dan Hudson and prospect David Holmberg. Arizona traded three-time All-Star Dan Haren to Anaheim for left-hander Joe Saunders and three other players last week. The Diamondbacks continued their rebuilding project by moving Jackson, an All-Star in 2009 who tossed the second no-hitter in franchise history June 25 against Tampa Bay. Arizona’s purge gives Chicago a solid addition to its rotation, which is missing injured right-hander Jake Peavy, the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner. The White Sox began the day with a 11/2-game lead in the AL Central over Minnesota. Jackson was 6-10 with a 5.16 ERA in 21 starts for the Diamondbacks this year, coming off an All-Star season in which he went 13-9 with a 3.62 ERA in 33 starts covering 214 innings for Detroit.

Tejada to Padres for prospect: The NL West-leading San Diego Padres acquired infielder Miguel Tejada from Baltimore for a Double-A pitcher. At 36, the former AL MVP was hitting .269 with seven homers and 39 RBI for the last-place Orioles, who earlier in the day hired Buck Showalter as their new manager. Tejada, the 2002 AL MVP, hasn’t been to the playoffs since the Oakland A’s made four straight appearances from 2000-03, losing in the divisional round each year. The Padres are trying to win their first division title since winning consecutive championships in 2005-06.

3B Cantu moves from Marlins to Rangers: The AL West-leading Rangers added another bat for the playoff push, acquiring Cantu from the Florida Marlins for two minor league pitchers. Cantu had two singles, scored twice and made an error in the Marlins’ 5-0 win at San Francisco before being replaced on defense in the bottom of the eighth. Cantu is set to meet the team in Anaheim on Friday morning. He hit .262 with 10 home runs and 54 RBI for Florida.

RP Capps traded to Twins: The Minnesota Twins made a big push to solidify their bullpen that has been without closer Joe Nathan all season, acquiring Matt Capps from the Washington Nationals for prized catching prospect Wilson Ramos and minor league left-hander Joe Testa. Capps is 3-3 with a 2.74 ERA and 26 saves in 30 chances this year for the struggling Nationals.

AP source: Yankees on verge of acquiring Berkman: The Yankees expect to acquire Lance Berkman from the Houston Astros on Saturday and already worked out a deal to obtain outfielder Austin Kearns from the Cleveland Indians. New York will send a couple of prospects to the Astros, likely to be reliever Mark Melancon and infielder Jimmy Paredes, and Houston will pay part of what Berkman is owed, a baseball executive familiar with the discussions said. The executive spoke on condition of anonymity because talks were ongoing. “Nothing’s been completed,” Berkman said Friday in Houston, before the Astros played Milwaukee. A five-time All-Star, Berkman has full no-trade rights and his approval was necessary for a trade. He did not play against the Brewers. The 34-year-old Berkman began Friday hitting .245 with 13 homers and 49 RBI. He has 60 walks and 70 strikeouts in 298 at-bats
