SAMMAMISH, Wash. — Bernhard Langer has himself in position for a second consecutive major championship.

Langer overcame a shaky front nine with an eagle and birdie on the inward half Friday to take the lead at 3 under in the second round of the U.S. Senior Open.

After a fog delay of more than two hours brought play to a halt just before 8 a.m., Langer shot a 2-under 68, making key putts on the back nine when his round easily could have slipped away. Langer won the Senior British Open on Sunday at Carnoustie.

Titans’ Fisher

dismisses accusations about USC lawsuit

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Coach Jeff Fisher has one word to describe the theory that the Titans sued Southern California because the NFL team is in the same state as Lane Kiffin’s last employer.

Absurd.

The Titans accuse USC and Kiffin of breaching the contract of running backs coach Kennedy Pola a week before training camp. The lawsuit was filed Monday.

Top pick Bradford signs with Rams

ST. LOUIS — No. 1 overall draft pick Sam Bradford agreed to a six-year, $78 million contract with the St. Louis Rams on Friday night, with $50 million in guaranteed money.

The Rams and the former Oklahoma quarterback concluded negotiations in time for the first full-squad workout set for Saturday. The guaranteed money is the highest ever in the NFL.

Bradford is the centerpiece of a rebuilding effort for the Rams, who were 1-15 last year in the first season under coach Steve Spagnuolo and are 6-42 the last three seasons.

Stewart atop the pack

after qualifying for

Pennsylvania 500

LONG POND, Pa. — Tony Stewart zipped his No. 14 Chevy for a qualifying lap Friday of 171.393 mph around the 2.5-mile triangle track to start from the top for Sunday’s Pennsylvania 500.

Juan Pablo Montoya will start second in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race for an impressive follow-up to last week’s pole start but disappointing 32nd-place finish at the Brickyard 400.

Denny Hamlin will start third as he tries to sweep both Pocono races. Hamlin won the Pocono 500 in June.

Jets sign coach Ryan,

GM Tannenbaum to

contract extensions

NEW YORK — The Jets have signed coach Rex Ryan to a two-year contract extension, and signed general manager Mike Tannenbaum to a new five-year deal — keeping both with the franchise through the 2014 season.

The team announced both deals Friday, two days before it reports for training camp in Cortland, N.Y. Tannenbaum’s deal was signed last month.

The bold and brash Ryan receives his extension after just one season in which he led the Jets to a 9-7 regular-season record and within one game of the Super Bowl.

Aide: Pitino never

mentioned seeking

abortion for woman

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A longtime aide to Rick Pitino told jurors the Louisville men’s basketball coach asked him to take a woman out of town for medical services after she said the coach got her pregnant in a one-night tryst at a restaurant.

The aide, Tim Sypher, testified Friday that Pitino did not mention taking Karen Cunagin Sypher to get an abortion. Tim Sypher, 49, said he called clinics in Indiana and Ohio before taking Karen Sypher to Cincinnati, where she terminated the pregnancy on Aug. 29, 2003.

Tim Sypher testified that he paid for the procedure from $3,000 Pitino gave for medical insurance.
