BALTIMORE — To get down to the 53-man limit, Baltimore also cut quarterback Troy Smith and kicker Shayne Graham, who competed this summer against incumbent Billy Cundiff.

Smith, the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner, played in 14 games over three seasons with Baltimore. He served as the backup to Joe Flacco last year, but the acquisition of veteran Marc Bulger during the offseason made Smith expendable.

“The competition to make our team was very heated, and we decided to keep a position player rather than a third quarterback,” general manager Ozzie Newsome said. “We have a number of young guys who made our team who have tremendous upside, plus they can help us win this year. We’ve gone with two quarterbacks before.”

Dolphins cut former WVU star QB White

DAVIE, Fla. — Quarterback Pat White has been released by the Miami Dolphins one year after they took him in the second round of the draft.

White struggled with his throwing accuracy during a disappointing rookie season in 2009, when he failed to complete any of his five passes in limited duty. The Dolphins kept three quarterbacks — Chad Henne, Chad Pennington and Tyler Thigpen.

Also waived was receiver Patrick Turner, a third-round pick in 2009. Miami terminated the contract of tight end David Martin, who missed last season because of a knee injury.

Cardinals release

former top pick Leinart

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals have released quarterback Matt Leinart, ending a rocky stint with the team that began with fanfare and ended with the former Southern California star taking a backseat to Derek Anderson in the last two preseason games.

The team announced the decision to release the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner Saturday.

Leinart was the 10th-overall selection in the 2006 NFL draft. He played in 29 games with 17 starts for Arizona, and threw for 3,893 yards with 14 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.

Dumervil says season

is over after injury

DENVER — Elvis Dumervil, the NFL’s leading top sacker, says he won’t play at all this season.

The Denver Broncos’ pass rusher underwent surgery last month to repair a torn chest muscle, but the team had been holding out hope he’d make a quicker than anticipated recovery and return to action in December.

Dumervil, however, posted a message on his Twitter account Friday night that confirmed an NFL.com report he’ll be going on injured reserve, ending his season.

Federer beats Mathiew, advances at U.S. Open

NEW YORK — Five-time champion Roger Federer won another match in straight sets at the U.S. Open, beating Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in the third round Saturday.

The second-seeded Federer had 13 aces and no double-faults. He fought off all four break points on his serve. Federer is 5-0 in his career against Mathieu.

The 109th-ranked Mathieu upset Lleyton Hewitt in the first round. He matched his best showing at the U.S. Open by reaching the third round.

Djokovic eliminates

Blake in U.S. Open

NEW YORK — Novak Djokovic reached the U.S. Open’s fourth round for the fourth consecutive year, eliminating American wild card James Blake in straight sets.

The third-seeded Djokovic beat Blake 6-1, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in a wind-whipped Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday night. Serbia’s Djokovic made only 13 unforced errors — 18 fewer than Blake.

In the fourth round, Djokovic will face another American, 19th-seeded Mardy Fish, who edged Arnaud Clement of France 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 Saturday.

QB Forcier not leaving

Michigan, says father

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Tate Forcier’s father said his son is not transferring from Michigan.

“That’s 150-percent fact,” Michael Forcier said in a telephone interview.

Wolverines quarterback Tate Forcier told annarbor.com, “All you need to know is I’m out,” after quarterback Denard Robinson led the Wolverines to a 30-10 victory against Connecticut on Saturday.

“Tate was upset he didn’t play, then he felt like a caged animal getting prodded by the media,” his father said. “There’s no way I’m going to be any part of him leaving Michigan. He’s going to play this season because there’s no way Robinson can keep taking a pounding like that.”

Day and Snedeker share

lead at Deutsche Bank

NORTON, Mass. — Jason Day and Brandt Snedeker played in far different conditions Saturday and wound up with a share of the lead halfway through the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Snedeker went from the rain showers of Hurricane Earl to breezy conditions Saturday morning in his second round and had a 7-under 64. The wind got stronger throughout the afternoon for Day, who did well to shoot 67 and join Snedeker atop the leaderboard.

Day, in the 36-hole lead for the second straight week in these playoffs, and Snedeker were at 12-under 130. They were one shot ahead of FedEx Cup leader Matt Kuchar (65) and Charley Hoffman (67), with Luke Donald (67) another shot behind.

Jiminez in the lead

at European Masters

CRANS-SUR-SIERRE, Switzerland — Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a 3-under 68 to take a three-stroke lead into the final round of the European Masters.

Jimenez, coming off a course-record 61 on Friday, called a one-stroke penalty on himself after marking his ball on the 10th fairway. He mistakenly thought he was allowed to lift, clean and place his ball because of wet conditions.

The 46-year-old Jimenez, a two-time winner this year, has 17 under. Italy’s Edoardo Molinari, the Johnnie Walker winner last week in Scotland, was second after a 68.

Schulz leads the pack

at First Tee Open

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Ted Schulz shot an 8-under 64 — his best competitive round in nearly 20 years — at Pebble Beach to take a three-stroke lead over first-lead leader Mark Calcavecchia and Tom Kite in the First Tee Open.

The 50-year-old Schulz, a two-time PGA Tour winner who has only conditional status on the Champions Tour, had nine birdies — all from 15 feet or closer — and one bogey in the second round to reach 12-under 132.

Calcavecchia, who held a two-stroke over Tom Pernice Jr., after an opening round 64 at Del Monte, had a 71 at Pebble Beach. Kite shot a 68, also at Pebble Beach.
