Associated Press ASHBURN, Va. — Mike Shanahan says Albert Haynesworth will be with the Washington Redskins when they open the season Sunday. Shanahan addressed Haynesworth’s status Wednesday, a day after multiple reports said the Redskins were in discussions with the Tennessee Titans about trading the two-time All-Pro defensive lineman. Shanahan did not deny the trade talks, but he did his best to put to rest any chance of Haynesworth getting moved this week. Shanahan would not say whether Haynesworth will play Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. He said such information would give a “competitive advantage” to the opponent. The coach also wouldn’t say whether he and Haynesworth have put their differences behind them. Giants backup running back Jacobs storms off EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs stormed off from an interview session with reporters after being questioned about his role. Jacobs has been demoted to the No. 2 back behind Ahmad Bradshaw. He refused to answer questions about comments he made last week that he was unhappy with his role. After answering some questions about the Giants’ new stadium and the upcoming season, he was asked about the team’s two-back system in 2008, when he and Derrick Ward shared carries and each ran for 1,000 yards. OLs Colombo, Kosier miss another Cowboys practice IRVING, Texas — Dallas Cowboys offensive linemen Marc Colombo and Kyle Kosier have missed practice again, jeopardizing their chances of playing in the opener Sunday night at Washington. Colombo, the right tackle, was expected to return by now. He had arthroscopic knee surgery in mid-August and was supposed to be back within two weeks. If he doesn’t play, offseason acquisition Alex Barron would start. Jake Long returns to Dolphins practice DAVIE, Fla. — Miami Dolphins Pro Bowl tackle Jake Long is back at practice on a limited basis. Long, nursing a left knee injury, was involved in some of Wednesday’s workout. Linebacker Channing Crowder, who has been sidelined since Aug. 17 because of a groin injury, jogged on the side. Mendenhall knows importance of run game PITTSBURGH — For months, the Pittsburgh Steelers have emphasized upgrading their running game. Rashard Mendenhall is determined to prove all this buildup is a lot more than idle talk. With the Steelers starting the very inexperienced Dennis Dixon at quarterback Sunday against Atlanta, Mendenhall knows that getting the running game going is a necessity to balancing an offense that simply can’t be as pass-heavy as it is with Ben Roethlisberger under center. There were a few flirtations a season ago with the Steelers’ running game of the past, as Mendenhall ran for 165 yards against San Diego and 155 against Denver. But it was their passing game and one of the NFL’s best defenses that were largely responsible for the Steelers’ 24 victories the last two seasons.
