A Brimfield police officer suffered minor injuries when his cruiser was struck by a vehicle fleeing police late Wednesday. The suspect, a 35-year-old Brimfield man, was later arrested and charged with six counts of felonious assault against police officers as well as possession of cocaine and operating a vehicle under the influence.

"He was absolutely driving like a maniac," Brimfield Police Chief David Blough said of James E. Gresko, of 3031 S.R. 43.

Gresko is currently being held at the Portage County jail in lieu of 10 percent of a $1 million bond.

Blough said K-9 patrolman Christopher Adkins was treated and released from Akron City Hospital following the crash. Adkins suffered a concussion along with some cuts and bruises, Blough said. The K-9 in Adkins vehicle, Joker, was not injured during the crash, Blough said.

According to Blough, the incident began shortly after midnight when police responded to a call of a male subject in the roadway in the 3000 block of S.R. 43. Upon police arrival, the subject -- later identified as Gresko -- jumped into a white, 2004 Hummer H2 sport utility vehicle and fled southbound on S.R. 43.

Officers from the Brimfield Police Department began a pursuit, joined by units from the Ohio Highway Patrol and the Portage County Sheriff's Office, Blough said. Speeds during the pursuit reached more than 100 mph, Blough said.

Gresko fled southbound on S.R. 43 to the area of U.S. 224, then drove across four lanes of travel at the intersection before driving back towards pursuing officers, attempting to strike the cruisers. Gresko proceeded back north on S.R. 43, attempted to strike a Brimfield police unit head-on, Blough said, then traveled left of center and did strike a Brimfield cruiser driven by Adkins.

Gresko's vehicle lost its front driver's side tire in the crash; however, he continued driving north on S.R. 43, Blough said.

Officers were able to box Gresko's vehicle in on the bridge over the Mogadore Reservoir, and at that time Gresko refused to exit the vehicle. He instead continued to attempt to move the vehicle, Blough said, aiming at officers who were now out of their vehicles.

To stop Gresko from causing further injuries, Blough said officers disabled the Hummer by firing shots into the remaining tires and also into the engine. Gresko was then removed from the vehicle and placed under arrest.

"The first thing he said to me was 'Why didn't you guys shoot me?'" Blough said. "I told him, 'You were unarmed. We're not going to shoot you.' I did tell him that if his vehicle wasn't disabled, though, and he continued toward officers we would have taken further action, but everybody was lucky here."

Blough said Gresko later told police he didn't know why he fled.

"He didn't appear to be entirely under the influence of alcohol, but he had stated that he'd used cocaine earlier in the evening, and we did recover some powdered cocaine from the interior of the vehicle," Blough said.

Gresko was arraigned Thursday in Portage County Municipal Court. A preliminary hearing has been set for Wednesday in Portage County Municipal Court in Kent.

That's a nice little sob story you shared, however, I did go to Mount Union with Gresko and he would get wasted and act like a complete A-Hole. He would threaten to beat people up, he was menacing and very disrespectful to women. I would characterize him as the cliche' toughguy Mr. All-America football player. When I read this article, based on his behavior in college, I was not the least bit suprised. You know the old saying, what goes around comes around? Well, looks like it finally came back at him!!!

Thanks Boss123. And not to mention if any of you have children in the Field Local Schools, especially Brimfield Elementary, you know how involved the BPD is with our children. These children have more respect for our police than I think I did when I was their age. They come eat lunch with them, talk to them, read the little ones stories at the local library, and even Officer Adkins went to the school the following week to show the kids that he and Joker were ok. I am very proud to have grown up in this beautiful Township my entire life. It has grown alot, and we are not done!!!!!!!!!

Right on hill5! I have lived in Brimfield for only 2 years, and found this to be a great town.Whether or not the lifelongers like it or not, this community will contiue to grow. Our Police Dept. does a great job in keeping us safe.We need more of them! Support this dept, with 25 square miles, and a major interstate running through it, we need more officers out there.

You know, we are the craziest cowboys in the county. This is okay, because we stand up for our town just like you would your own. It is so easy to trash someone or some place in writing, but face to face I bet it's another story. Drug trafficing does not make us crazy cowboys. Ignorant people do though. Worry about how you are going to clean up your own town before you start criticizing mine and telling me the reasons you "think" that we are so bad. I grew up here and damn proud to be a crazy ass Brimtucky Hillbilly.

Check the new news. Great cooks come out of Brimfield. And its a nice place. I live 15 min away, so how are my teeth? Jackasses......
Every town has its good and bad points.
I would love to know the lovely towns of fart, twins18 and others. Drugs and crime are everywhere. Do you want to go badmouthing everyone!? Kent, Ravenna, Freedom, Mantua, Widham and just keep on going! HELLO?! How bout badmouthing the whole USA? Jackasses... I was shocked when I found out the swamps of Mespo had crack problems.
But thank goodness NE Ohio is full of good, wholesome folks too. I'm proud of where we live out this way. Brimfield being a part.
And teeth aint got nothin to do with it.
Jackasses.

How am I in denial. I never said that there wasn't any crime in Brimfield. I never even denied that there is crime in Brimfield. So, tell me, how am I in denial. I know there is crime in Brimfield but, there is also crime everywhere else in this world. But I guess since you have such an opinion and a motivation to put people down publicly that makes you better than me. I know this is a place of opinion but, I watch the comment posts alot and all I see is people putting other people down constantly. And we wonder why today's generation of children are so unrully. I guess you have a pretty firm opinion regarding Brimfield. That's your opinion, but I never put anyone down. You did and I guess that makes you ArtesianFart a "Stand up kinda guy".
Thanks Angel1 1
