Born March 5, 1909 in Ashville, he was the son of John and Charity (Wolfe) Chester. He lived for many years in Salem.
Mr. Chester was employed by Walter Gray Motor Sales in Salem. He also worked as head of the transportation department for the Ravenna school district for more than 20 years, until he retired in 1971.
Survivors include his sons, John Jr. of Davison, Mich. and Jack of Deerfield; daughters, Flo Bendetta of Berlin Center and Nancy Agnews of Deerfield; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and brother, William of Columbus. His wife, Margaret (Hilling), to whom he had been married for more than 50 years, died in 1985. Three brothers, three sisters and one granddaughter also died previously.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
