Gladys (Hilverding) Sumner, 88, of Kent, died Thursday at Canterbury Villa of Alliance after a long illness. Born Sept. 9, 1909 in Washington County, Ohio, she was the daughter of Edward D. and Bessie M. Mobley Hilverding Guthrie. She had lived in Kent since 1959. Mrs. Sumner had served as Director of Nursing at Mt. Sinai and St. Luke's Medical Centersin Cleveland. She had taught at Kent State University and served as a nurse for the Red Cross during World War II. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Kent. She was a member of the KSU Faculty Wives Association and the Portage County R.N. Association. Survivors include her stepdaughter, Mrs. Robert (Mary Alice) Jones of Ravenna; two step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Charles B., to whom she was married in March of 1959, died April 20, 1994. A brother, C. P. "Bud" Hilverding, died April 17, 1985. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Maple-Cotton Funeral Home in Kensington, where funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gene Hydrick officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery in Minerva.
