Supt. Willie James Evans was born October 19, 1922 to the late Bennie and Luella Evans in Marengo County, Alabama. Supt. Evans accepted Christ at an early age and married his childhood sweetheart Johnnie M. Evans which they have been married 72 years.
Supt. Evans served in the United States Army during World War II and received an honorable discharge. He was appointed pastor of the Winfield Church of God in Christ, located in Ravenna, OH where he served for 38-years.
When the church out grew the original church building and prior to becoming pastor, Elder Evans drew up the blueprint for the current building and once approved, began laying the foundation and building the church building.
He worked diligently on the building while working a full time job at Ford Motor Company. He has been retired from Ford for 30 years. During his ministry Supt. Evans began the Winfield Food Pantry where he and his wife served people hot meals each week. The ministry expanded to include clothes give away and monthly food distributions, and the ministry continues today.
Supt. Evans faithfully supported Ohio North First Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ for a number of years, as pastor and superintendent. As a District leader he supported the Jurisdiction's Sunday School Department during the Workers Meeting and the Holy Convocation and rallied to receive the Sunday School Banner. His accomplishments were many but just to name a few he was the Recipient of the Good Shepherd Award; he received the Bishop's Servant Award, and he also received Ohio North Special Recognition Award.
Supt. Evans leaves to cherish his memory; his wife of 72 years Missionary Johnnie Evans of Ravenna, Ohio; one son; James Edward Evans (Barbara) of Oakwood, Ohio; one daughter Janice McDaniel of Ravenna, Ohio, five-grandsons; six-great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two brothers; Arthur Gray Evans and Woodson Evans both of Jasper, Alabama, Mrs. Shelley Evans daughter-in-law of Kent, Ohio; spiritual daughter Missionary Diana Starks, of Twinsburg, Ohio; spiritual son and caregiver Mr. Lee Smith of Ravenna, Ohio; and special caregivers Devon Lovejoy and Loretta of Ravenna, Ohio; the Winfield Church Family, the Ravenna District; and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends. He was preceded in death by one son Calvin Darnell Evans, two sisters and one brother.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Winfield C.O.G.I.C., 6595 Winfield Street, Ravenna Ohio 44266, Supt. James H. Bannerman officiating and Bishop Edward T. Cook, Jurisdictional Prelate. Interment Maple Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Procession will form and condolences may be sent 6672 Henderson Rd. Ravenna, OH 44266.
