John A. Vechery, 78 years of age, passed away Thursday December 27, 2012 at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. John was born on August 9, 1934 in the family home in Mantua Township, the son of the late Alex and Elizabeth (Simko) Vechery. John's life revolved around both his public service to the people of the entire Mantua area, and to his love of vegetable farming, farming the Hungarian way in the local "Muck Lands". John began his 35 plus years of service to the area as Mantua Township Zoning Inspector and Cemetery Sexton, also serving as a Mantua Township Trustee for 4 years, Mantua Village Zoning Inspector in the 1980's, as well as holding that position the past 2 years. John was also employed as a bus driver for 10 years by the Crestwood School System. John held a Real Estate License, and along with his wife Terri, they wrote and taught continuing education classes for area real estate agents.Vegetable farming was without a doubt something that John, and Terri will always be remembered for, including their many trips to the West Side Market in Cleveland and to Hartville as well as other farmers markets. He was a founding member 20 years ago of the Kent Vegetable Farmers Market. John completely enjoyed cars and drag racing, eventually legally sharing his drag racing with his son Jim at Quaker City Raceway. An avid reader, John was a history buff, a former reporter, photographer and printer of the Mantua Record, and a self educated man of numerous subjects. For those who knew John, his work desk was an inspiration to a "special type of organizational skills". Restoring old tractors was just another of his many talents. John was a U.S. Army Veteran and a member of the American Legion. On February 14, 1981, he married Terri (Parker) Vechery, who survives at their home. Also left to carry on his memory are his children James P. (Anita) Vechery of Mantua, Sherry Vechery of Concord, North Carolina, Laura (Ken) Parker and Shelly (Doug) Poots both of Mantua, Mary Vechery of Brentwood, Maryland and Martha (Jeff) Levine of Stow, Ohio, as well as 7 grandchildren.
