Walter "Roger" Smith

Walter "Roger" Smith, 84, of Rootstown passed away Friday, January 18, 2013 at Robinson Memorial Hospital. He was born October 28, 1928 Bethesda, OH. to the late Marian and Mildred (Anderson) Smith.


He served with the US Army. He retired from the heating and cooling industry, and was a custodian at the Ravenna Assembly of God for 10 years. Walter attended the Community Bible Church in Rootstown and was a member of the Ravenna American Legion.

Survivors include his loving wife, Doris (Kissel) Smith whom he married November 12, 1948, daughters, JoAnn Roswell of Ravenna, Christine (James) Black of Rootstown, sons, Ronald, Fred, Michael (Victoria) Smith all of South Bend, IN, a brother, Franklin Smith of Ravenna, 15 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren. Besides his parents he was preceded by his son Roger, sisters, Phyllis Cross, and Ramona Smith.

Calling hours will be held from 2 - 4 & 6- till time of the service at 7:00 PM Monday, January 21, 2013 at the Shorts Spicer Crislip Funeral Home Ravenna Chapel. Rev. Scott Hindel will be officiating. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.sscfuneralhomes.com.

Thank you so much for all the love and kindness you always showed to everyone. I will always remember your awesome sense of humor and the way you showed the love of Christ to everyone you met. Thank you for all you did for everyone. Until we see you again in Heaven we will miss you on Earth.

Doris,Fred,Ron, Mike,Vickie,JoAnn & Christine

Roger was like family to us and will be greatly missed. Well known as Papa Smurf he was an asset to his community and all who knew him.

You have our sympathy but know he is with the God he prayed to every day!
