March 27, 1944 - January 23, 2013
David Christian Sander passed away on January 23, 2013 after a 30 month battle with Glioblastoma Multiforme, a form of brain cancer, at age 68. He was surrounded by his loving family in his last days at home.
David was born on March 27, 1944 in Ravenna, Ohio to the late Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Nathaniel Sander. David grew up in Ravenna and then attended Kent State University and Ohio Northern, earning a degree in Pharmacy in 1967. He was a member of the Kappa Psi Fraternity. He began his pharmacy career in Kent, Ohio and moved to Statesville, NC in 1976. He was a member of New Salem United Methodist Church. He owned and operated All-Star Sports on Broad Street from 1978 to 1992. He returned to pharmacy and moved to Lake Norman in 2000.
A lifelong sailor and sportsman, he enjoyed sailing, windsurfing, water and snow skiing, basketball, golfing, fishing and camping. He was a devoted father to his three children and six grandchildren and spent much time at their activities and serving as the neighborhood "Tickle Monster". David was a fan of Ohio State and the Cleveland Browns football teams. Upon retirement at age 63, he spent summers fly fishing, hiking and camping in Colorado and winters sailing Biscayne Bay in Florida. He traveled throughout his life with his family and friends to many national parks, windsurfing destinations and beyond. His favorite vistas include the Tetons and sunsets on the Outer Banks. David was well known by friends and family for his sense of humor and love of life. He will be missed beyond words.
He is survived by his partner of 17 years, Susan G. Woods. Daughter Michelle Sander Dagenhart (Erik) has two children, Olivia and Sam Dagenhart and resides in Charlotte. Son David M. Sander has two children, Nathaniel and Hannah Kirke, residing in Wake Forest. Daughter Tami Sander Atkins (Tim) has two daughters, Vivian and Eliza, residing in Chapel Hill. David's sister, Bonnie and Jim Kusmits reside in Canal Fulton, Ohio. Brother William and Nancy Sander live in Cooper City, Florida.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at New Salem United Methodist Church in Statesville on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at 2:30p.m. The family will visit guests in the Fellowship Hall after the service. His ashes will be interred at a later date by the family.
