William David Alger, 86 years of age, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2013 in Aurora, Ohio. Born on September 6, 1927 in Windham, Ohio, he was the son of the late Burrell and Eliza (Goatley) Alger. A graduate of Windham High School, Bill then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Bill was a prominent dairy farmer in Ravenna for many years, reminding those who knew him that he didn't have any hobbies, because farming was his hobby that he loved. He was a member of the Farm Service Agency Committee, the Portage County Dairy Committee, and the Portage County Corn Club. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Central Ohio Breeding Association. Bill attended and was very active with the Mantua Center Christian Church. Bill had a witty sense of humor, with plenty of favorite sayings that will be remembered by all who knew him. His smile, his love of chocolate, and the fact that Bill liked everyone and everyone liked him, will be cherished memories for family and friends. After 50 years of farming, Bill enjoyed traveling in his Motor Home visiting most of the United States and the Provinces of Canada, and spending the winters in Florida. Following his military service, Bill came home and married Glenna (Heckman) Alger, whose passing took place in 1990 after 42 years of marriage. Also preceding him in death were his siblings Richard Alger and Grace Peterson. On July 26, 1992, he married Gloria (Parker) Howard, Alger who survives at their home. Also surviving are his sons, David ( Ruth) Alger and Richard ( Kathleen) Alger, daughter , Jayne ( William) Reaser, step-children Michael ( Peggy) Howard and Philip ( Kathy) Howard, all of Ravenna, Nancy ( Michael) Tafel and Patty Kelley both of Hiram, Ohio. His sister, Norah-Creina Dalzell of Columbia, Missouri, 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive. Calling hours will be Sunday, December 1, 2013, from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua. Bill will be laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna, Ohio with military honors provided by a U.S. Navy Honor Guard Team. A Memorial service to Celebrate his Life will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at the Mantua Center Christian Church, 4118 State Route 82, Mantua, Ohio 44255 with Rev. Chad Delaney officiating.
