Elmer A. "Skip" Welling, Sr., age 70 of Ravenna, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Robinson Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 20, 1943, in Easton, Pennsylvania, to parents Elmer F. and Lottie Elizabeth (Sutton) Welling. Skip retired as a shipping and receiving clerk with the Chrysler Twinsburg Plant in 2004, and was a member of the local UAW Cap Council. He proudly served his country as a medic in the US Army. Skip was active in local politics, having served on numerous campaigns and working part-time at the Portage County Board of Elections. He was also an honorary member of the Federated Democratic Women of Ohio and the Federated Democratic Women of Portage County. Skip volunteered as a transporter at Robinson Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Ravenna Elks.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Norma Lee (Carver) Welling, as well as their children: Amy Elizabeth (Doug) Jones of Union, KY, Elmer "Skip" Welling Jr. of Parma, and Scott A. (Tiffany) Welling of Ravenna. Skip's memory will also be cherished by his grandchildren: Amanda, Brooke, and Carley Jones, and Hannah and Connor Welling.
He was preceded in death by his parents and mother-in-law Betty Thompson.
Cremation has taken place. Friends will be received Thursday, March 20, 2014, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, where funeral services will be officiated by Reverend Bill Wisniewski on Friday at 11:00 AM. Inurnment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery with military honors provided by the US Army Honor Guard and VFW Post 1055.
