Mary Louise Byrne
Mary Louise Byrne, 90, died peacefully Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Stow Glen.
Mary was born Dec. 28, 1923 in Akron to the late John E. and Gertrude Burridge Smith. She lived her entire life in Kent, graduating from Kent State University School in 1941. Her senior year she was crowned "Pigskin Princess" and her boyfriend and husband-to-be was the Homecoming King. Mary married Robert D. Byrne on Sept. 17, 1942.
She worked seasonally at her families business- Smith Brothers Greenhouses, and soon became very busy raising a growing family. Sherry was the first born, followed by Mark, Laurie, Wendy and Christy.Mary was very involved in the community all her life. She was president of Kent Junior Mothers and KSU's Chestnut Society, active in the PTA, Kent Women's Club, Cotene, Sinfonia, Portage County Democratic Party, Porthouse Theater at Blossom Music Center, Christ Episcopal Church, Altar Guild, Portage County Realtors, Meals on Wheels, Townhall II, and Robinson Memorial Hospital as a volunteer, to name a few!
Following the unexpected death of her husband, Bob in 1966, Mary started a new career, studying for and obtaining her real estate broker's license which she parlayed into a successful career. She most dearly loved her family and friends, reading, music, the theater, jewelry, shoes, and the beach.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents ,husband Robert, son Mark, daughter-in-law Helmtrud, daughter Christy Fitzgerald, brother John and sister Katherine Bauer. She is survived by her daughters: Sherry (David) Moore, Laurie Betzhold and Wendy (David) Mayer; 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank all her caregivers at Stow Glen and Robinson Memorial Hospice for all their compassionate care and kindness. And a special thank you to her two dearest and constant friends Darlene Kousaie and Jill Beer for their unwavering support and love for Mary.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial celebration of Mary's amazing life will take place. At a later date. Burial will be held at Standing Rock Cemetery.
