Donald J. Knapp, age 92 of Atwater, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, May 22, 2014.
He was born June 3, 1921, in Randolph, Ohio, to parents Michael and Charlotte (Graening) Knapp. Donald lived most of his life in Atwater and worked for Knapp Brothers Construction Company and retired from Akron General Medical Center. After retirement, Mr. Knapp enjoyed woodworking and making furniture and doll houses for family and friends. Don and his wife enjoyed many years of dancing, especially the polka and waltzes.
Mr. Knapp was a charter member of the Atwater Lions Club and remained active until his death. He was also a member of the Deerfield American Legion Post 713 and the Atwater Historical Society. Donald was a former Atwater Township Trustee, volunteer fireman, and attended the Atwater United Methodist Church.
Mr. Knapp was a decorated veteran of WWII as a member of the 99th Infantry Division, receiving the Purple Heart, The Bronze Star Medal & Combat Infantryman Badge. He served in the United States Army from 1942 - 1945, seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes Forest, Rhineland Campaign, and the Central Europe Campaign.
Don will be dearly missed by his wife of 70 years, Maxine (Hartman) Knapp, and their children: Dorothy (George) Strabel, Norma Roessler, Richard Knapp, Barbara (Michael) Slattery, Carol (David) Darrah, and Loretta (Robert) Murphy. His memory will also be cherished by his grandchildren: Pamela (Bret) Roberson, Brian (Erinn) Strabel, Julie Roessler, Ryan Knapp, Mary Knapp, Dylan Knapp, Gregory (Kelly) Slattery, Sarah (Jason) McKendrick, Adam (Angie) Schultz, and Alison (Jared) Smith, as well as his 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings: Robert (Evelyn) Knapp and Martha (Edward) Vojtko.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his siblings: Paul Knapp, Annabelle Knapp, Betty Wood, and Lester Knapp; his grandson Mark Roessler, and daughter-in-law Margaret Knapp.
Friends will be received Tuesday, May 27, 2014, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, where funeral services will be officiated by Reverend James MacDonald on Wednesday at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Randolph with military honors provided by the US Army and Deerfield American Legion Honor Guard.
