Richard J. Velek

MANTUA

Richard J. Velek, 65 years of age, passed away Saturday May 31, 2014 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on April 13, 1949, he was the son of the late Joseph and Tillie (Brenda) Velek. A resident of the Mantua area the past 30 years, Mr. Velek had been employed as a Forman at Marlen Manufacturing in Bedford Hts., Ohio for 41 years, retiring in 2012. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Aurora and Mantua Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Velek proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam Era. He was a racing enthusiast at Summit Motor Sports Park in Norwalk, Ohio with his Pontiac GTO and Trans AM, as well as racing at the Pontiac Nationals the past 11 years with his sons and grandsons. A man who could be both quiet and funny, spending quality time with his family at their cottage at Pymantuning since 1995 will always be cherished memories for them to carry on.

On November 30, 1974, he married Carol P. (Simon) Velek who survives at their home. Also surviving are his children Michael (Beth) Velek, Daniel (Toni) Velek and Melissa (William) Beatty all of Mantua and Stephanie Velek of Streetsboro, and 7 grandchildren. Preceding his in death was his brother Ronald Velek and grandson Brian Velek.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua, where his funeral services will be held Thursday June 5, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.

Final resting place will follow at Westlawn Cemetery in Mantua Township with Full Military Respects provided by U.S. Army Honor Guard Team, assisted by members of Mantua American Legion Post No. 193. His obituary and video tribute may be viewed at www.greenfamilyfuneralhome.com.
