William Carl Myers, Jr.
William Carl Myers, Jr., age 93, passed away at The Ohio State Medical Center on Saturday, July 19, 2014. He was born to the late William Carl and Eva Caroline Roth Myers on December 3, 1920 in Orrville, Ohio. A Captain with the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, he enlisted on September 17, 1942. He served as a Security and Intelligence Officer, overseas, with the Army Airways Communications Systems, and in the American Theater Campaign. He was awarded the German Occupation Medal, Victory Medal, European - African - Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Battle Star for Normandy, France and Four Overseas Service Bars, and the Jubile De La Liberte Medal. He was discharged from his military service on July 24, 1946.
Memorable experiences: VI (buzz) bombs in London; flying into Colleville (Omaha Beach) and the Battle of Normandy; Paris (Liberation and V-E Day); meeting and obtaining General Patton's signature; installing cryptographic station at Gatow Airport for Potsdam Conference; collecting medals and stationery from Hitler's bunker.
A Graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School and a Graduate of Kent State (BS) and The Ohio State University (MS), he retired from Battelle Memorial Institute as a research physicist. A member of Summit United Methodist Church, he was an avid Buckeye Fan. Bill was an avid tennis player and bowler, and loved Big Band Music, especially Harry James.
He is preceded in death by his wife Ruth Elaine Moss Myers; and brother Byron Roth Myers. He is survived by his children, Ann Moss (Paul) Goodrich, Steven Allen (Linda) Myers, Carol Sue (Brian) Johnson; grandchildren Oakley Michael Myers, Willow Dawn (Philip) Desrosiers, Amy Ruth (Thom) Greene and Andrew Paul Gundrum; great-grandchildren Sadie Madrone Myers, Maya Elizabeth Desrosiers and Sydney Layne Desrosiers; brother James Pierre (Sally) Myers of Kent.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, July 23, 2014 from 10 to 11:30 am at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221, where the Funeral service will follow at 11:30 am. Interment at Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Westminster - Thurber Employee Appreciation Fund, 717 Neil Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43215 in his memory.
