Alice Darr

Alice Darr, age 79 of Kent, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2014, at Robinson Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born November 6, 1934, in Springfield, Illinois, to parents Florence (Patton) and Benjamin Franklin Dozier. Alice and her 4 brothers grew up on a farm near Springfield, Illinois, where she was active in high school band, church activities, and 4-H. On December 21, 1957, Alice married the love of her life, Ralph F. Darr, Jr.

Alice attended Oakridge Elementary School and graduated from Pawnee High School, (Illinois). She earned her bachelor's degree from Illinois State University at Normal, her master's degree from Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, and her PhD in Secondary Education from the University of Akron.

Alice moved to northeast Ohio in 1968 after having taught high school in Illinois and Wisconsin. She was a tenured professor at Kent State University, retiring in 1998. She initially served as Coordinator of Home Economics Education and subsequently as Coordinator of the Vocational Education Non-Degree Certification Program. Alice served as Co-Chair of the KSU Commencement Committee for over 25 years.

She was a member of several honorary professional organizations including: Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, and Kappa Omicron Phi, as well as, many professional organizations including the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, the AAUP, the NEA and the OEA. She held several state positions within these organizations.

Since retiring, Alice traveled and volunteered throughout the community. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Kent and was always willing to help others.

Alice is survived by her husband and children: Nancy Sue (James T. Heacock) Darr of Franklin, TN, and William R. Darr of Eastlake, OH, and her brothers Charles Dozier of the Villages of Florida and David Lindsey (Annette) Dozier of St. Charles, MO. Alice's memory will also be cherished by her grandchildren: Jonathan V. (Whitney) Heacock, Benjamin James (Kate) Heacock, and Sarah Elizabeth Heacock; as well as her great-grandchildren: Celia Elizabeth Heacock and Lincoln Daniel Heacock. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Robert Lynn and William Howard Dozier.

Friends will be received Thursday, August 28, 2014, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna. Friends may also call on Friday, August 29, 2014, from 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM funeral service at the United Methodist Church of Kent, 1435 E. Main St., Kent. Reverend Dr. David Palmer and Reverend Doug Denton will officiate the service. Interment will follow at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.
