Wm. L. (Bill) Shorts, 92, passed away June 9th at his home in Fort Myers, FL surrounded by his loving family.
Born May 27, 1925 in Sharon, PA to Loyal and Maud (Bowden) Shorts. After serving in the US Navy in the South Pacific during WWII he attended Youngstown State University and graduated from Cleveland College of Mortuary Science in 1950. In 1954 he established the Shorts Funeral Home and ambulance service in Ravenna. In 1975 he opened his second funeral home in Streetsboro. Bill was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Past President and lifetime honorary member of the Ravenna Rotary Club. He also served on the boards of Portage County Society for Crippled Children and Adults, the Ravenna area Chamber of Commerce, The United Way of Portage County, Ravenna JayCees and the Portage County Boys Club. He sponsored many little league baseball teams and helped establish the Ravenna Rams Pee -Wee football program. He was a member of the Portage County Chapter DAV, served as Post Commander of American Legion #331 and was a member of VFW #1055. He served as Ravenna City Health Commissioner from 1957-1976. As a Mason he was a member of F & AM Unity #12, Valley of Canton, Portage County Shrine Club, Tadmore Temple and Loyal Order of Jesters #80. He was a life member of Elks #1076 and the Ravenna Moose #1234.
Left to cherish his memory, wife of 68 years Phyllis, son Bill Jr. (Malia) of Fort Myers, daughters, Judy Appleyard and Susan (Dr. Harold) Putt, of Arizona, five grandchildren and a great- grandson.
Services will be held at St. Hilary's Episcopal Church in Fort Myers, on Friday, June 16th at 11:00 am, Memorials may be made to charities of your choice. Service at Grace Episcopal Church, Ravenna and internment at Maple Grove Cemetery will take place at a later date. Local arrangements made by Shorts-Spicer-Crislip Funeral Home.
