I have followed with some interest, from here in Massachusetts, the planned Veterans Memorial for the new bus station in Kent. Although my doctorate is in education, urban planning interests me as well.
The city where I live, Lowell, Mass., has recently gone through its own revitalization. We have been very successful with a dramatic increase in tourism and all of the business that brings. As the city fathers were discussing plans for the revitalization, possibly a veterans memorial was discussed.
One thing I'm sure that the Lowell city planners realized is that very few people will cross the street to see a veterans memorial unless it is something spectacular like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Can you envision such a thing for your community?
Anyway, our city planners decided to emphasize Lowell's history as a garment making center and as a literary center. So one thing we did was to dedicate a small park in downtown to the memory of Jack Kerouac. People come from all over the country to see the park.
I hope you find what I've said to be helpful. All the best in your efforts to revitalize your downtown.
