The handwriting is on the wall. Given the inability of House Speaker John Boehner to pass his Plan B, there seems little doubt that we will fall off the fiscal cliff. It is difficult to understand if it is a matter of President Obama's brilliance, or the stupidity of a majority of House Republicans.
The Democrats now have the upper hand. Simply fall off the cliff, and on January 2nd send a bill to the House to cut the taxes on all but those earning over $250,000. Who would vote against that? The president will almost certainly win that battle.
President Obama made an earnest effort to negotiate and even offered to give more than most in his party thought was appropriate. He did his part.
Although it may seem like strong language, the House Republicans are acting not only irresponsibly, but their refusal to raise taxes seems to me to be an act of high treason. Yes, treason!
I am sure they believe they will be re-elected by keeping their pledge (even if it sends our economy down the drain), but the irony is that by refusing to raise taxes on a very small percentage of wealthy Americans, they are forcibly raising taxes on everyone. How honorable is that?
Surely, they are smart enough to know that taxes will be increased if they do nothing. So they do nothing. They are not acting in the best interests of their country, but only in their own. They are not fit to hold office.
One can only hope that those who voted them in power have enough sense to vote them out of power next time around.
