I am looking forward to voting for the bond issue that will provide funding for a new Streetsboro high school and renovation of other school buildings.
After years of debate over whether our children have adequate facilities, the state has stepped in and concluded that our facilities need dramatic improvement immediately and offered us $24 million to help improve them now. The debate of whether we need to do it is over.
I think most of us originally wanted the new high school to be on City Park, but we now know that is impossible. We should be grateful that all options have been exhausted.
Some folks will always make excuses for why something can't be done, or why "now isn't the right time." However, our high school students and teachers have been enduring overcrowding so bad that they've been meeting outside in trailers for many years. It's not just that our school facilities are antiquated and inadequate, it's that they don't even have enough space.
Studies in other parts of the country all concluded that improved facilities increased educational achievement, resulted in fewer disciplinary incidents, improved attendance and encouraged adult and parental involvement in the school. Additionally, new school facilities also improve our property values and quality of life.
After living in this community for 24 years, it's exciting to see this day finally arrive! How can there be a better investment for any of us? Please vote "Yes" on Nov. 5.
