I read the recent Record-Courier article on the increase in concealed-carry gun permits. I think everyone who has a gun and is a responsible, law-abiding citizen should get a permit. We have to have permits for so many things, getting married, driving a car, hunting, having a garage sale. These people are showing good common sense in that they are making the effort to educate themselves about the responsibilities of gun ownership and safety.
This does not guarantee that they will always do the right thing. There will continue to be abuse of guns and people killed by people with guns, mostly ones without permits. Recently there were two incidents in the news about responsible gun owners who lost it in the heat of the moment and killed someone. One was a retired sheriff.
People getting concealed-carry permits have to renew them every couple of years.
We should have retesting to renew our driver's licenses. The state is missing out on some money, and people who should not be driving anymore are running around because they can pay the fee and pass (sometimes with much help) the eye exam. I just took mine and what a farce. I know a person who has one good eye, is blind in the other and cannot hear. His reactions are delayed due to a stroke and advanced age. He is still driving.
I hope some really astute politician in Columbus will read this and get the ball rolling on the license retest thing.

We already have a permit, it is called the 2nd amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Only law abiding citizens will ever get a permit. Outlaws and felons will never get a permit.
