It is with great concern that I write this letter. My concern is that the Kent Board of Education is considering outsourcing of the transportation of the students there.
The buses and and transportation are the property of the voters in that district and should not be negotiated away. If money can be saved by a for-profit business then why can't the same be done by the so-called qualified administration? The board should mandate that those that work for them keep the ownership and the transportation of their charges under home rule.
Other districts have tried this with poor to bad results. They lost control of transportation and property and literally are at the mercy of those that now control what they charge because the district gave away those controls by entering into agreements that are not conducive in the long run.
If the board chooses to outsource this service then maybe it should consider outsourcing the entire management of the school system, including the superintendent and his subordinate staff. After all, they are admitting that they can`t do the job as well as the party that they recommend to outsource transportation.
It is time that the school board steps up and tell these persons that they work for them and the taxpayers of their district. Do your job or face outsourcing.
