Portage parks enhance quality of life

Published: May 1, 2014 4:00 AM

In spring, summer and fall my wife and I cycle the Portage Hike and Bike Trail from Kent east to Redbrush Road, or farther through Ravenna and the terminus at Peck Road.Kayaking on the Cuyahoga River from Kent to Munroe Falls is great fun, and our whole family hikes or skis at Towner's Woods the year round.

We love to watch the seasons change in Portage County's parks while we get a healthy dose of exercise and fresh air. We often greet friends and neighbors who are also out enjoying nature.

Portage County's parks enhance the quality of life in our area immensely. Please join me in voting "yes" for Portage Park District on May 6.

I am sure the parks division will accept any and all money you send them. Why wait for moeny to be confiscated from the retired and other residential property owners.

Or ...is all this support for tax increases for the parks from those who don't and won't pay any of the tax?

Portage Engineer looking for license fee hikes to fund road work

By Mike Sever | Staff Writer Published: May 1, 2014 4:00AM

Portage County Engineer Mickey Marozzi is looking for new money to pave and maintain county roads in the face of declining gasoline tax revenues......

....Right now, he said, "I'm not even paving two miles of road per year" of high traffic roads out of the 370 miles of county roads. Roads with fewer than 3,000 cars per day -- Level 2 and 3 roads -- only are maintenance by chip and seal treatments. And a bad winter like this past one eats up maintenance funds, he said.

Do we need roads and bridges repaired for the many, or paved hike/bike trails for the few???

The county needs the roads/bridges fixed, and let us not forget the need at the county jail.
