On Monday, April 28, the Record-Courier ran an editorial cartoon linking Planned Parenthood to generating electricity by incinerating aborted fetuses. The cartoon was titled "Electricity From Abortions." Drawn by Gary McCoy and syndicated by Cagle Cartoons, it shows a storefront with a large sign reading "PLANNED PARENTHOOD & POWER CO." and a seated figure holding a newspaper with the words "ABORTED BABIES BURNED FOR ELECTRICITY"
I immediately Googled the latter phrase, and checked it out with Snopes (www.snopes.com/politics/medical/incinerator.asp.) I found that Fox News and others had reported that Marion County in Oregon had been buying and incinerating medical waste from Canada (where power generation with medical waste is forbidden) but found no connection whatsoever between that and Planned Parenthood.
Then I found this from April 27, 2014: "On canonizations, heaven and hell; Planned Parenthood's taxpayer-funded bigotry" by Matt C. Abbott (www.renewamerica.com/columns/abbott/140427 ) "Planned Parenthood receives more than half a billion in tax dollars per year,..." suggesting that because PP gets tax money they are in effect using aborted babies to generate electricity.
I am appalled, outraged and frightened. Planned Parenthood has never generated electricity; it defies common sense that anyone could believe that they do.
How is it that a syndicated cartoonist and the editor of a responsible hometown daily can publicly display this false and impossible connection between a women's health organization and the generation of electricity?
To me, it appears that the only reason for distributing or displaying this cartoon is to generate outrage against Planned Parenthood.
If the Record-Courier received other protests against the McCoy cartoon, would we know about it?
