Grateful for response to Kent gas leak

Published:

I want to thank all of the people who helped the residents of Four Seasons of Horning Road in Kent on June 20. A car hit the gas meters, leaving the leaking gas to fill the building. With the quick action of friends helping friends, the residents were quickly ushered out to safety. Some were with walkers, wheelchairs, oxygen, pajamas and no shoes.

We were met by the Kent Police Department and the Kent State University Police Department. We all gathered at the United Church of Christ, and from there were taken to the KSU Recreation and Wellness Center by PARTA buses. On our arrival, we were greeted by the Red Cross, KSU students and staff. We were fed by Pizza Hut of Kent and snacks and drinks were supplied by the American Red Cross.

I want to thank the fire departments of Kent, Ravenna. Stow, Streetsboro, Tallmadge and Rootstown for their help with the safety of our building and the residents. Also, the KSU Police Department returned to the building when it was safe to get our residents' furry friends who got left behind. Also, thanks to Officer Scritchfield for retrieving the diabetes medicine for my husband and me. Thanks also to the Portage County Sheriff's Department and the Brimfield EMS.

We were at great risk for a serious explosion, but thanks to the well-trained fire departments, we were able to return to our homes by 6:30 p.m,. Thanks to everyone for assisting us and showing us what a great community we live in.

Julie Ellsworth, Kent
