I have been reading recent letters here about global warming. It is appalling that anyone still thinks man-created climate change is not real. Our earth is very sick and the only question is: Do we yet have time to change the course of this catastrophic man-made warming?
Information Today announces the discovery of plumes of methane being released in the warming Arctic. Science has long understood that methane is found in great amounts locked by the frozen climate of the Arctic. As the earth warms, huge amounts of this methane are being released to the atmosphere where it is a terribly effective greenhouse gas. As one leading climatologist, Dr. Jason Box, said of this release of methane, "We are screwed."
The evidence of the problem is easily seen and overwhelming. What follows is just a tiny list of the results of global warming: Widespread areas of farmland are now no longer usable in Australia in what was a leading wheat-producing area. Recent droughts in California threaten our massive fruit and produce production. Wildfires are cropping up in every increasing numbers. The past decade was the warmest in recorded human history with the highest recorded level of CO2 in the air. The strongest typhoon ever seen was just measured in the China Sea. The ocean level is steadily on the rise threatening coastal areas with irreversible flooding. Some recent studies indicate perhaps more than 50 percent of living species will go extinct by the end of the century. Important CO2-absorbing rainforest areas are being destroyed in ever increasing amounts. There is also a concern that a stoppage of the Gulf Stream current is a real possibility as more and more freshwater flows from the melting Greenland ice sheets.
The most serious question for the next century is: Will civilization itself survive? This issue is no longer a political football and those who use it for cheap political points do tremendous harm to mankind.
What does it say when the leaders of the right wing in Washington say when asked about global warming, "Well, I am not a scientist"? Well, of course they are not scientists, but why not listen to the real scientists, who spend their lives studying the issue, instead giving ear to proxies set up by energy companies?
