Ohio gubernatorial candidate and current Secretary of State Jon Husted recently snuck into Kent for a closed-door meeting with university and city officials. Part of Husted's duties as Secretary of State is to make sure elections run smoothly and fairly. Rather, he has spent most of his eight-year tenure finding ways to disenfranchise poor and minority voters, losing thousands of voter registration records, decreasing times and days for voting as well as polling spots, being sued by voter rights groups (and losing) and just being a train wreck when it comes to serving his constituents.
Members of the Portage Country Democratic Socialists and supporters confronted Husted when he arrived for his meeting and questioned him on his record. He immediately took out his phone and started filming the crowd, smirking the entire time, treating his constituents with disdain and mocking our efforts.
Husted has kicked more than 200,000 Ohioans off the voter registration rolls, three quarters of them from heavily Democratic districts in Akron, Cleveland and Columbus. His time consuming and expensive search for non-citizen voters netted only 5 convictions (no jail time) out of 8.2 million votes cast from 2013-2015 according to the Columbus Dispatch, a whopping .00006 percent.
Voting is a right and making it harder to vote and suppressing votes is not what we expect in a democracy. And this guy wants to be governor. Are you kidding!
