Portage County-area churches are partnering in the Little Dresses for Africa project.

The project began with the Rootstown United Methodist Church, where Karen Kurtz received a pattern for the dresses from a retired teacher in Stow who participates in the program. The church has five women making the dresses and shorts, which have been displayed at Logos Christian Bookstore in Kent once completed.

This summer, the Rootstown church is partnering with three others to send the dresses overseas. Ten dresses will be going to an orphanage in Haiti this month with members of the Lake Brady United Methodist Church. The Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy will take 20 dresses and 15 pairs of shorts to the Dominican Republic in June. In July, Riverwood Community Chapel in Kent is sponsoring a teen mission trip and will be taking dresses and shorts to the Dominican Republic.

Each dress has a pocket with a small stuffed animal in it. A small toy car will be included with each pair of shorts.

For more information or to volunteer with this project, contact Kurtz at 330-221-4220 or klkurtz62@netzero.net.
