Red Devils impressive early

ROOTSTOWN _ Crestwood opened the 1998 track season right where it left off.

A year after the Red Devils girls team won the Portage County League championship and the boys finished a close third, the teams served notice that they will once again be contenders for the league title by sweeping dual meets with the boys and girls teams from Rootstown and Streetsboro Tuesday at Rootstown.

The Crestwood girls beat Rootstown 75-53 and Streetsboro 113-15, while the boys were a 79-44 winner over Rootstown and 103-20 winner over Streetsboro.

Rootstown's boys and girls teams defeated Streetsboro 88-35 and 94 1/2 -32 1/2, respectively.

"I like the way we've started," said Crestwood coach Don Faix. "I think the girls are going to be a powerhouse this year, and the boys are also going to be a contender."

The Red Devil girls dominated the distance events Tuesday, with Melanie Ziarko finishing first in the 1,600 meters (13:08) and the 3,200 (5:57), followed close behind by teammate Jenny Schmidt, who was second in both races.

Ziarko and Schmidt also teamed with Beth Rohrbaugh and Misti Jacobs to win the 4x800 relay with a time of 11:14.3.

In all, the Crestwood girls claimed 10 overall first-place finishes in 16 events, including two firsts by Jenny Reese in the high jump (5-0) and long jump (13-11 3/4).

"Jenny Reese had a really good day," said Faix. "And she's coming off a year where she was a PCL champion. Really, I think all the girls looked good."

Rootstown girls coach Bob Halliwell was also pleased with he first day of PCL competition.

"Crestwood has been the major power in the league, and for them to come in and beat us by 20 ... I think we did pretty well," said Halliwell. "We had some really good performances. Valerie Cubon and Ashley Rykaceski both had very good days. Valerie won the 800 (2:45.4) and Ashley won the 400 (68.1). And Rachelle Garner did very well. She has been hurt (turf toe), but she still managed to finish first in the 200 (28.4) and the 100 (13.4). I think we've got a very good team. More people are becoming competitive for us."

Streetsboro also had an encouraging first day.

"Danielle Lintz did very well," said Streetsboro girls coach Tom Fesemyer. "She took a first in the 100 hurdles (17.8). Danielle is a real competitor and she'll be one of our top performers this year ... Michelle Poston should also have a good year for us."

Poston won the discus with a throw of 93-1.

Streetsboro's boys and girls teams have both benefited by an increase in numbers, with 28 athletes on each of the Rockets' rosters.

"We have a lot more people out and that is encouraging," said Streetsboro boys coach Dave Hostetler. "We're still very undermanned. It would be nice to win a (dual meet) like this, but we are aiming at the league meet."

Brian Hearns had the best overall performance for the Rocket boys, finishing on top in the high jump at 6-feet.

Rootstown's James Turck turned in what might have been the best performance of the day, winning the mile with a time of 4:40.6, more than three seconds ahead of Crestwood star Nathan McClintock.

"That was two seconds off my personal best, so I'm feeling pretty good," said Turck. "Coach (Larry Bailey) always told me the third lap is where you win or lose in the mile, and I just knew I had to stay with (McClintock). I was a little surprised that I pulled away from him ... I heard McClintock was hurt and hadn't been running a lot lately, but it is still a great feeling to beat one of the best runners in the '90s in the PCL."

McClintock is suffering from an inflamed tendon in his right foot, but Faix said the Red Devil star will be ready when the season gets into full swing.

"He probably will be back in top form by midseason," said Faix. "But Nathan's injury takes nothing away from Turck. He ran a very good race, and he looks great."

Rootstown boys coach Larry Bailey is looking forward to a Turck-McClintock rematch at the PCL championship meet.

"It will be interesting to see what happens at the league meet," said Bailey. "Even hurt, McClintock is one hell of an athlete. Turck is really a converted sprinter. We've had some great distance runners at Rootstown in the past, but none were even close to as fast as he is. I don't know if he can beat McClintock (at the PCL championship), but if he doesn't, he'll have nothing to be ashamed of because I think Nathan is one of the best in Ohio. I have a lot of respect for him."
