PALMYRA - It took a little while for the excitement to kick in, but Thursday night's Southeast-Streetsboro dual meet turned out to be a match worthy of the long wrestling rivalry between the two Portage County League teams. Southeast took complete control in the early weights, winning the first seven matches of the evening for a 28-0 lead, only to watch the Rockets battle back to within four points on the strength of five consecutive victories of their own. The Pirates managed to hold off the Streetsboro charge thanks to a typical solid performance from the bottom of the lineup, as 215-pounder Dustin Dohse and 275-pounder Tom Crock closed the meet with a pair of wins to lead Southeast to a 37-24 victory. "It is a tremendous luxury to have guys like that at the end of the lineup," said Southeast head coach Ralph Graham. "Dohse (16-2) and Crock (15-1) have been basically automatic all year long." Dohse's win, a 10-4 decision over Clint Rutherford, actually clinched the victory for Southeast, giving the Pirates a 31-24 lead with one match remaining. Crock applied the finishing touch by pinning Jamil Smith, who was wrestling his first varsity match, in just 1:19. Southeast built its enormous early lead on a forfeit at 112 pounds, a 36-second pin at 135 by Chris Dunfee and decisions by Eric Henry (103 pounds), Joel Aemmer (119), Erik Bartley (125), Joe Sutcliffe (130) and Chris Weichman (140). The 103-pound victory by Henry over Keith Ward was a pleasant surprise that gave the Pirates (5-0-1) something to build on. "That was a very good match," said Graham. "Henry is only a sophomore, and I wasn't sure how he'd respond. He came back from being down 6-2 (to win 12-10). That was a big win for him because I think the odds on that match had to be in Streetsboro's favor. He came out and wrestled the best he has all year." While Henry's early victory proved to be the stepping stone for the Pirates, Streetsboro's forfeit at 112 proved to be a back breaker for the Rockets. "Jim Kuchta just didn't make weight, and he's one of the best on the team," said Streetsboro coach Jim Boardwine. "That was possibly as much as a 12-point swing. It's a shame because Kuchta had been talking all week about how 'we've got to beat Southeast, and we've got to do it as a team.' And then when it came down to him doing his part by making weight, he didn't come through. That's just a lack of self discipline." An undisciplined match by both Southeast and Streetsboro at 145 pounds, however, helped turn the tide in the Rockets favor. Streetsboro scored its first victory of the day when Brandon DiDona won on a disqualification. Southeast's Nathan Keppler was hit with a head-butting call in the third period of a match marred by a few brief shoving bouts. "It was a shame for us because we lost our composure at 145 and that seemed to change the momentum," said Graham. "There was a lot going on both ways, but we have to take responsibility for what we did." Streetsboro followed the victory with an impressive 19-7 major decision by Bora Tucture at 152, an 8-2 decision by Anthony Rumplik at 160 and a pin by Scott Chappell 57 seconds into his 171-pound match. Adam Ward gave Streetsboro back-to-back pins with a 40-second pin of Nathan Dohse at 189 to pull the Rockets back to within four at 28-24. "That was Ward's first win, and it was a nice way to get it," said Boardwine. "He was a late sub for Wayne Weingart, who has vertigo. Southeast also had to go without Joe Botsford at 189 because he's been banged up. ... It was a good dual. Southeast is a very good team and Ralph Graham always does a nice job and has his team well prepared. We have a lot of respect for them." _____ Southeast 37, Streetsboro 24 (At Southeast) 103 _ Eric Henry (SE) dec. Keith Ward, 12-10. 112 _ Chris Sutcliffe (SE) by forfeit. 119 _ Joel Aemmer (SE) dec.
