Ravens' wrestlers fall to Warriors

DUBLIN -The Division II State Wrestling Dual Meet Tournament, run by the Ohio High School Coaches Association, was held at Dublin Coffman High School Sunday. Featuring top-seeded Ravenna, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the state, the tournament showcases team wrestling, as opposed to individuals in the normal state tournament. As predicted, Ravenna met second-seeded Walsh Jesuit in the finals. With little horsepower left in the tank after wrestling twice on Sunday, the Ravens fell to the Warriors 35-20. "I didn't think we wrestled well at all," said Ravenna coach Steve Reedy, whose team looked very listless in the finals. "We lost three matches I expected to win. "But I have to credit Walsh. They are a good team. They wrestled well in the finals. I can't take anything away from them." For Walsh coach Bill Barger, it was his fifth Ohio Duals title, as the Warriors won in 1994, '95, '96 and '97. "The kids wrestled well," said Barger. "We won the close matches. We beat some of their good kids. "There were some matches that could have gone either way. If we wrestle again in this format, they might win those matches. Coach Reedy and I talked about this before the match." When Barger was asked about the OHSAA state wrestling meet to be held on March 4-6, he said, "They (Ravenna) are a great tournament team. No question they will be there at the end." Ravenna, who is weak in the lower weights, gives up points before its strength kicks in. On Sunday though, the strength didn't kick in. Walsh had a big lead and never was threatened. But the bouts were closely contested. The match opened with Mike Napalo earning a 6-4 decision over Ravenna's Brian Hickman. Then Ravenna forfeited at 112 pounds. Brandon Hayes brought the Ravens back with a 17-0 technical fall over Kyle Hodges at 119 to narrow Walsh's lead to 9-5. Here is where Ravenna went into the dumpster. Mike Hurley, Nate Daugherty, Bob Romano, and Aaron Woodruff won matches over Todd Wunderle, Mike Ramsey, Jeff Dunfee and Justin Wise, respectively. Suddenly, Ravenna was down 21-5. "We needed a couple of wins in those early matches and we didn't get them," said Reedy. Just when it looked like Ravenna was on track when Keith Lara pinned Josh Leach at 145, the Ravens lost another match when Jeff Delaney suffered a 14-5 major decision to John Lowery at 152. The 26-11 deficit loomed big. Vince Zmith, who bumped up to 160, had a 11-5 win over Alex Sveda. "The match of the night had to be at 171," said Reedy. "It was hard fought and wasn't decided until the end." It featured Ravenna's J.R. Shrewsberry against Walsh's P.J. Jones, who resides in Ravenna. Jones came out on top 8-5 in a very physical bout. Up 15 points, Barger knew he would probably lose the next two matches to Ravenna. Instructions were handed out to not get pinned. It worked as Ravenna's Brad Bauer scored a 5-2 decision over Brendon Verner at 189 and Andy Hampton was a 10-6 winner over Joe Indriolo. Walsh heavyweight Dennis Thompson pinned Joey Mozer to end the match. Ravenna earned its way into the finals by defeating Sandusky Perkins 49-12 in the semifinals. Walsh was a 30-21 victor over Urichsville Claymont. Hayes, Zmith and Hampton were the only Ravens to win all their matches. Finishing third in the Ohio Duals was Claymont with a 42-22 win over Perkins. Olentangy was fifth with a 42-24 win over St. Paris Graham. West Holmes was seventh as the Knights downed Purcell Marion 36-30. In the first round, Ravenna faced Purcell Marion and Walsh Jesuit opposed West Holmes. As usual, the Ravens got off to a slow start, losing the first two bouts and faced a 12-0 deficit. However, the Ravens recovered and scored the next 53 points, rolling to a 53-18 victory. Six wrestlers scored pins, including Mike Ramsey, Jeff Dunfee, Justin Wise, Vince Zmith, J.R. Shrewsberry and Brad Bauer. Walsh won by a convincing 49-17 margin over West Holmes. _____ OHIO DUALS (At Dublin Coffman) ChampionSHIP MATCH Walsh Jesuit 35, Ravenna 20 103 _ Nagalo (WJ) dec.
