Garfield took control early in the boys meet,

Garfield took control early in the boys meet, riding the wave of first-place finishes by John Oliver and Andy Ellerhorst to win their second league meet in three years by 29 points over runner-up Southeast.

In the girls meet, Rootstown charged from 35 points behind early on Saturday, finally overtaking Crestwood with three events remaining, then holding to win xx-xx over the Red Devils.

"Crestwood jumped ahead 84-49, and I thought, 'Oh my gosh, we're getting killed,' " said Rootstown girls coach Bob Halliwell. "But then we started coming back. This team is very coachable. They do what they have to do. They've done that all year long in big meets. We are a good big-meet team."

The turning point came in the 800 meters, when Gina Rossi and Kelly Wilburn finished first and second, respectively, pulling the Rovers to within 1 1/2 points of the Red Devils, 108-106 1/2.

The Rovers took the lead one event later, when Ashley Rykaceski finished second (27.52) and Rachelle Garner third (27.53) in the 200.

"We score 18 points in the 800 and 14 in the 200, that's 32 in two events," Halliwell. "Just like that, boom, we are in the lead."

Rootstown also had some solid performances to help whittle away at the lead, including an unexpected third-place finish in the shot put and fourth-place finish in the long jump by Anna Losh, a full-time softball player and part-time track performer.

Garner gave Rootstown a league champion in the 100, winning with a time of 12.96.

In the boys meet, John Oliver and Andy Ellerhorst were a scoring machine for Garfield.

Two days after winning the league championship in the long jump despite only practicing the event for three days, Oliver won three more titles, finishing first in the high jump (6-4), the 110 hurdles (15.43) and the 300 hurdles (39.8).

Ellerhorst won the league title in the 200 (22.9) and the 100 (11.4). He also was on the winning 4x100 relay team (44.5) with John Fresch, Jeff Ellerhorst and Nick Rogers.

"I feel very fortunate to coach a team armed with a considerable amount of athleticism," said Garfield coach John Bennett. "It's exciting to watch these guys all season and know they have a chance to win in every event.

"I was very happy for Andy because he has worked so hard the last five years, coming back from a back injury, to do what he has done in track. And with Oliver, his athleticism is just amazing. I don't know that he has any limits. He may be able to do just about any event."

While Garfield and Rootstown won Saturday's team titles, the meet's second-place finishers earned the bigger prizes.

Southeast, the boys regular-season champion, held on to the overall league title by finishing second.

Crestwood, which finished the dual-meet season in a tie with Southeast, won the overall girls PCL championship Saturday.

"I give Rootstown a lot of credit," said Crestwood coach Don Faix. "I congratulate them, because they came a long way back to win. They lost two league meets, though, so they couldn't win the overall title. We're disappointed we didn't win (the league meet), but we feel like we won the bigger prize."

Jenny Reese led the way for the Red Devils, following Thursday's victory in the high jump by winning the PCL title in the long jump (17-2) and the 100 hurdles (15.39), both school records.

Crestwood also won championships when Erika Waickman won the shot put with an effort of 38-5 3/4, and Lynne Christofaris, Erin Christofaris, Sonya Romo and Holly Pero won the 4x100 relay (52.1).

Southeast's second-place finish in the boys meet was keyed by Mike Nelson's win in the 3,200 (9:51.5).

"Field was ahead by one point going into the two-mile, 88-87, and Mike Nelson pulled our butts out of the fire like he has all year," said Southeast boys coach Dave Graham. "He showed up big. Other than that, we had 12 guys score in 14 events.

"I can't wait to see how these PCL teams do at the state meet. Garfield has a good chance to win a state championship in Division III. Field has the best 4x800 relay team, Rootstown has some very good people and Mogadore has some kids who can make some noise. This is a very good league."

Southeast's girls finished third, led by a second consecutive PCL title by Bobbi Stewart in the 400. Stewart also won her second straight title in the 4x400 relay, teaming with Angie Finch, Megan Wygle and Laura Divoky to run a 4:16.2.

"Bobbi is a very talented senior," said Southeast girls coach Dick Young. "As a freshman, she anchored the mile relay team that finished seventh at states. Now she's our leadoff. Her job is to get us a lead, and she'll do whatever it takes to do that."

Waterloo won a pair of league championships, including Stacey VanHorn's second straight title in the 300 hurdles (15.39), and Sarah Schultz' victory in the 200 (27.2).

Field's Emily Mars won two league titles, finishing first in the 1,600 (5:19.2) and the 3,200 (11:53.8).

The Field boys won a pair of league championships Saturday: Nathan Hutchinson in the 1,600 (4:26.9) and Mike Hall in the 800 (1:57.7).

Crestwood's Brian Stenger won the league championship in the discus with a 157-0, and Rootstown's Nick DiFeo won the PCL title in the 400 with a 50.6.
