Southeast off and running

ATWATER _ There were no surprises at Waterloo High School Tuesday as the Southeast track teams completed a sweep during the opening Portage County League double-dual meet of the spring.

Lisa Dubinsky, Megan Wygle and Laura Divoky each captured a pair of individual events, leading the Southeast girls team to a 90-38 victory over Waterloo and a 114-14 win over Garfield.

"If we stay healthy, we'll have a very, very good team," said longtime Pirate girls coach Dick Young. "We have a lot of veterans back. They have experience, talent and they work hard, very hard. We had a 15-week indoor season that led right into the outdoor."

According to Young, it was the junior Dubinsky, with first-place finishes in the shot put and discus, that set the tone for a successful day on a chilly Waterloo track.

"That set it up," he said, "and then the one-two finishes in the 100 hurdles (by Wygle and Katie Mound) gave us a cushion that took the pressure off the rest of the night."

Wygle also won the 300-meter hurdles, while Divoky took the 100 and 200 meters.

The Waterloo girls squad, paced by sophomore Tess Francis, who won the 1,600 and 3,200, easily ran past the Garfield girls 109-19.

The talented Pirates boys used a balanced attack to defeat the Vikings and G-Men.

Kyle Gintert, Joe Divoky, J.D. Novak and Mike Chilson each won at least two individual events as the Pirates got by Garfield 73-50 and turned back Waterloo 84-36.

Like the girls team, the Waterloo boys were able to post a win, a 67 1/2-55 1/2 victory over Garfield.

Gintert won the 100, 200 and 400, while Divoky garnered the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. Novak took the shot and discus, and Chilson won the 800 and 1,600.

"We were scratching for every point early," said first-year Southeast coach Mark Gintert, father of Kyle. "Then our big guns, Divoky and Gintert, (took over). Divoky won both hurdles and Kyle won the 1, 2 and 400 meters. And Mike Chilson did a great job for us in the distance events. He won the mile and the 800; that was a big win for us."

The victory by the Waterloo boys over Garfield was especially satisfying to Vikings coach Greg Drugan.

"This is the first time we've beat Garfield," he said. "This is my fourth year and I'm sure it's been longer than that. I'm real pleased with our effort."

Drugan was not surprised by Southeast's performance.

"Southeast, they're just a dominant team," he said. "They are going to be one of the top two in the league along with Crestwood."

Highlights for the Vikings boys included a victory by the foursome of Joe Seymour, Mike Kane, Nick Knipp and Mike Marcello in the 4x400 relay. Sophomore Bill Govan also had a nice showing with a pair of second-place finishes in the 110 and 300 hurdles.

The Garfield boys didn't capture a individual event but claimed both the 4x800 and 4x100 relays.
