Rovers win streak over

MANTUA Relatively speaking, the Rootstown Rovers boys basketball team shut down the Crestwood Red Devils Big Three of Nate Calapa, Jarrod Kohl and Jason Carlton Friday night, but that did not affect Ed Leventry. Actually, not many things can affect him. As his fellow teammates played an average contest, Leventry stepped in to score 10 points and grab 16 rebounds leading Crestwood to the 56-36 Portage County League victory. Crestwood (7-4, 5-4) head coach Josh Jakacki has seen Leventrys solid performances many times before. Ed Leventry is a guy we cannot replace, said Jakacki. When he sat out the last two games (injured) we struggled a little bit. He is just so steady, every single game you know he will give you at least 10 to 14 points and get 10 rebounds no matter what the circumstance is. Jakackis counterpart, Rootstown coach Greg Bryte, agreed with the presence Leventry created on the floor. Obviously we wanted to concentrate on (Nate) Calapa, (Jarrod) Kohl and (Jason) Carlton, but we also knew about Leventry, said Bryte. We knew he could hurt us, but we did not box out well enough and he got countless backside rebounds. The Rovers were trying to climb back into the game the whole night. After scoring only four points in the opening quarter due to an effective Crestwood zone defense. Our team is so tall and lanky that when we go into a zone defense it can shock teams, stated Jakacki. Because our arms are so long, when they are outstretched the entire lane is accounted for and it can give teams trouble. With the use of the zone defense, the Red Devils held a double digit halftime lead 27-16. Although, in the opening minutes of the third quarter the Rovers showed that they had some more fight left in them. Rootstown was able to cut Crestwoods lead to 29-20, but the Red Devils answered with a 10-2 run and never looked back. The whole night we were struggling to make shots (11-54 field goal shooting), emphasized Bryte. We would make a small run, but could not take them to the next level and finish them off.
