DEERFIELD The Memorial Day Weekend Classic night at Deerfield Speedway in the A-1 Auto & Spring Sportsman division belonged to Art Williams, who won his heat and feature. Williams slid under his brother, Ted Williams, in turn 2 with the help of lapped traffic and won easily over Chuck Waller, who finished second. The feature event in the Micro Sprint division was won by Tom Robertson, with J.J. Jute finishing second, followed by track record holder Bob Robertson. The Mels Towing Modified Lites feature was rain-shortened, but proved to be the most exciting race of the evening. On lap 1, the two lead cars and Jack Nutter made contact, and piled the field up at the flagmans feet. Mikey Hauge dodged the crash and wound up winning the race.
