When 11 players (of 17) on a hockey team are credited with either a goal, assist, save or a combination of those, there is a real good chance those players will be found on the winning team.
And it will be a team that indeed turned in a true team effort.
Kent Roosevelt fit that mold during Monday's season opener that ended with a 9-1 victory in favor of the Rough Riders over host Cleveland Benedictine (4-1).
After allowing Cleveland Benedictine's freshman Joe Kolenic to net a goal in the first 11 seconds of the first period, with teammate Ron Moner earning the assist, Kent Roosevelt's team utilized quick, sharp and accurate passes to score nine unanswered goals to eventually post a comfortable win.
"It was a total team effort, it was one of the better passing games I have seen this team have in quite some time," veteran Kent Roosevelt head coach Ben Barlow said.
Barlow was pleased that his team established what they wanted to do in the offensive zone.
"Coming out of preseason we played fairly well," Barlow said. "We didn't play as well as we wanted to in the third period during preseason. What I saw tonight was a different team. We have an offensive philosophy and the kids played it very well."
Senior captain Kyle Manning led the offensive effort for Kent Roosevelt (1-0) with four goals and two assists for six points.
"Kyle set the tone tonight with his passing," Barlow said. "Even though he scored four goals, he was looking to move the puck and get players involved. I was very proud of his efforts."
Barlow also cited the efforts of his freshman players in the victory.
"Our freshmen did really well, playing in their first high school game on this big surface," he said.
Freshmen Matt Marniella and Lyndon Rainey each scored their first career high school goals.
Also netting goals for the Rough Riders were junior Okko Boger, whose first of two goals of the evening were his first high school goals. Additionally, sophomore Gabe Smith scored and was credited with an assist on Marniella's goal.
Also earning assists were juniors Scott Rainey and Gordie Fisher -- each with two -- along with juniors Dontae Montemayor and Mitch Fisher.
