Kent State wrestlers finish second at Brute Invitational

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Kent State finished second of 13 teams Saturday at the Brute Invitational inside Thomas Fieldhouse at Lock Haven University late Saturday evening. The Golden Flashes were led by senior Stevie Mitcheff, who won a 125-pound championship, while redshirt freshman Sam Wheeler and senior Casey Newburg were co-champions at 184.

"We've gotten a lot better," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said of the team's progress this season. "We're still trying to find consistency in certain spots. If we had our regular lineup in place I think we would have won this tournament."

Mitcheff went 4-0 on the day, beginning with a first period pin of Sacred Heart's Joe Harris. Mitcheff closed the night with a 2-1 victory over Lock Haven's Robert Ream. Mitcheff was in deep on shots throughout the match, but did not finish off a takedown until the final seconds of the third period.

"Stevie kept plugging away and finally got one," Andrassy said. "He did a good job today. But he's going to have to do a better job of capitalizing on shots against tougher competition."
