The Kent State men's basketball team's first backyard battle of the 2012-13 season against Akron has been selected for the Mid-American Conference's national January basketball television package on ESPNU.
Coach Rob Senderoff and the Golden Flashes will host coach Keith Dambrot and the Zips on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 3 p.m.
Kent State (9-5) is currently on a four-game winning streak after defeating host Cleveland State 72-55 Wednesday night. Seniors Chris Evans and Randal Holt continue to lead the Golden Flashes in scoring. Evans is averaging 16.5 points per game, while Holt is averaging 13.4 points and leads the MAC in 3-pointers made with 33.
Akron (9-4) has won its last five games after taking down Coppin State on Wednesday 91-63, and is currently the only team in the MAC with a better record than Kent State.
The Zips are currently riding a four-game winning streak against the Flashes, including a 3-0 sweep of KSU last season. Two of those wins have come in the MAC Tournament, including the 2011 title game.
Akron has two players scoring in double figures, and is the only team in the MAC with seven players averaging seven points or better: Zeke Marshall (13.3), Demetrius Treadwell (10.9), Nick Harney (9.9), Alex Abreu (9.3), Brian Walsh (8.3), Jake Kretzer (7.8) and Chauncey Gilliam (7.3).
Conference play begins on Wednesday, when all 12 teams will take the hardwood.
