High School Roundup (Jan. 11): Poole's game-high 17 not enough for Field

BOYS BASKETBALL

COVENTRY 55, FIELD 42

The host Comets outscored the Falcons 16-7 in the second quarter to open a 12-point halftime lead and held on for a PTC Metro Division win on Friday.

Coventry (6-6, 4-3) led 14-11 after one quarter and pushed the margin to 20-18 at intermission. Field (2-7, 0-7) managed to cut the lead to six points with a 16-10 scoring burst in the third quarter, but the Comets recovered to outscore the Falcons 15-8 over the final eight minutes.

Jesse Oravecz led Coventry with 16 points and eight rebounds, while George Jacobs added 11 points for the Comets.

Michael Poole tossed in a game-high 17 points and added eight boards to pace Field, with teammate Austin Sparks also hitting double digits with 12 points.

BOYS BOWLING

SPRINGFIELD 2,264, STREETSBORO 1,798

The Spartans earned another Portage Trail Conference Metro Division victory, beating the Rockets at Kent Lanes.

The Spartans' Garrett Masters tossed the high series of the match, a 227-235--462, with Kyle Ambrose adding a 409 series, including a 208 game.

Tyler Fleming was the best for the Rockets with a 315 series and a high game of 165.

RAVENNA 2,478, AKRON NORTH 2,211

The Ravens picked up their ninth win of the season with only one loss, beating Akron North in a non-league match.

The Ravens' Dylan Montgomery again topped the match after rolling a 243-253 for a series just four pins short of 500. Seth Stennett's 457 series included a high game of 229.

CRESTWOOD 2,422, EAST CANTON 2,090

Crestwood's Matt Lyons, Bradley Woodrum and Ryan Amber all topped the 400 series mark in a cross-division win over East Canton at College Bowl.

Lyons bowled a 234 high game, with Woodrum adding a 208 and Ambler tossing a 243.

The Hornets were led by Nick Wagner's 198.

GIRLS BOWLING

SPRINGFIELD 2,123, STREETSBORO 1,446

Springfield continues its march toward potentially repeating as Portage Trail Conference Metro Division champions, routing the Rockets.

The Spartans' Savannah Nester tossed a 236 high game, and Amanda Smith helped Springfield's effort with her 196 game.

The Rockets were led by Becca Fleming's 171.

CRESTWOOD 1,893, EAST CANTON 1,533

Crestwood (7-4) traveled to College Bowl in Canton and handed the Hornets (3-11) a cross-division loss.

The Red Devils' Leannah Frances had the best series, rolling a 321, including a 162 high game, with Summer Stephens bowling the best game for the visitors, a 169.

For East Canton, Sabrina Hester earned the high game of the match, bowling a 171 on her way to a 285 series.
