Akron 71, Ball State 64
AKRON -- Nick Harney scored 15 points to help Akron win its eighth straight, beating Ball State 71-64 Wednesday night in a Mid-American Conference game.
Zeke Marshall scored 13 points and Alex Abreu added 11 for Akron (12-4, 3-0).
Trailing 34-28 at halftime, Ball State (7-8, 1-2) fought back to get within one, 47-46 on Jauwan Scaife's 3-pointer with 10:48 left to play. That was the closest the Cardinals would get as Abreu answered with a 3-pointer on the next possession.
Ahead 63-57 with under 2 minutes to play, Abreu connected on a 3-pointer to put the Zips ahead 66-57 with just 1:04 remaining.
Akron would make 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Akron shot 85.2 percent (23-of-27) from the line compared to Ball State's 64.7 percent (11-of-17).
Majok Majok led Ball State with a career-high 26 points and 13 rebounds.
Miami (Ohio) 63, Bowling Green 60
OXFORD -- Will Felder hit a go-ahead jumper with 2 minutes left and Miami (Ohio) dropped Bowling Green to 0-6 on the road this year in a 63-60 victory Wednesday night.
Bowling Green (6-10, 1-2 Mid-American Conference) led the entire game until Felder's jumper tied it 55-55 with 5:23 left. His field goal with 2 minutes remaining gave Miami (7-8, 2-1) its second lead at 61-60.
Chauncey Orr's jumper with 2:36 left was the Falcons' last point, with Jordon Crawford missing a jumper and committing two turnovers in Bowling Green's final three possessions.
Felder paced Miami with a career-high 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Drew McGhee hit 7 of 9 for a season-best 14 points off the bench.
The RedHawks came into Wednesday shooting a MAC-best 47.7 percent in conference games, and made 54.9 percent (28-of-51) Wednesday.
Bowling Green's Crawford and A'uston Calhoun each scored 21 points.
Ohio 81, Northern Illinois 63
ATHENS -- Walter Offutt scored 19 points and Ohio used a 20-2 run in the first half to defeat Northern Illinois 81-63 in a Mid-American Conference game Wednesday night.
Reggie Keely chipped in 12 points for the Bobcats (12-5, 3-0), who are 11-1 at home.
Abdel Nader scored 17 points for Northern Illinois (3-12, 1-2), Keith Gray had 14 and J.J. Cravatta and Darrell Bowie had 10 each.
Northern Illinois led 10-9 on Daveon Balls' jumper with 13:57 left, but Ohio's run gave it a 29-12 advantage, capped by Ivo Baltic's dunk with 5:35 remaining. Stevie Taylor scored all eight of his points during the run.
The Bobcats led 45-18 at the break, shooting 68 percent from the field (17-of-25) and 63.6 percent from beyond the arc (7-of-11). Ohio had assists on 16 of its baskets compared to two for Northern Illinois.
Western Michigan 79, Toledo 56
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Shayne Whittington scored 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds Wednesday night, helping Western Michigan build a big lead and cruise to a 79-56 victory over Toledo.
Whittington, who recorded his fifth double-double of the season, added five blocks, three steals and three assists. Darius Paul and David Brown added 15 points apiece for the Broncos (9-7, 1-2 Mid-American), and Nate Hutcheson's nine points moved him within 76 of 1,000 for his career. Hutcheson was making his 100th career start, the eighth Bronco to reach that mark.
Julius Brown scored 16 points for the Rockets (6-8, 2-1), who shot just 37 percent from the floor.
Western Michigan never trailed, leading 34-19 at halftime and by as many as 26 in the second half. The Broncos outscored the Rockets 38-16 in the paint and outrebounded them 44-26.
Toledo still leads 78-56 in the all-time series, which dates to the 1936-37 season.
