GIRLS BOWLING

SPRINGFIELD 2,340, COVENTRY 2,236

It was a battle of the league leaders in the PTC Metro Division as the Spartans traveled to Turkeyfoot Lanes in the Portage Lakes to tackle the Comets in a battle between two teams that were unbeaten in the division.

When the last pin had fallen, defending PTC Metro Division champion Springfield topped Coventry by 104 pins.

Following the first regular game, Springfield had a 29-pin lead, then extended the lead by an additional 15 pins in the second regular game. With the match still very much within the sights of the Comets, Springfield found its footing, bowling a 533 Baker series that included a 191 game against the 473 series rolled by Coventry.

Springfield kept its undefeated division record intact, improving to 14-2 and 8-0 in the PTC Metro behind solid scoring from Amanda Smith (196-391), Savannah Nestor (201-385) and Lisa Stout (199-381).

Coventry (10-3, 6-1) had a nice series from Chelsea Miller (212-390) and a high game of 212 rolled by Kailey Lushes.

RAVENNA 2,151, STREETSBORO 1,454

The Ravens picked up their first PTC Metro Division victory of the season, beating the Rockets at Bill White's Twin Star Lanes.

The Ravens (7-8, 1-6) were led by Gwen Martin's 201-375 and Natalie Hartong's 192-369.

Jessica Roch was the best for Streetsboro (0-10, 0-6), bowling a 124 high game on her way to a 218 series.

BOYS BOWLING

RAVENNA 2,353, STREETSBORO 1,815

The Ravens' Chris Lovejoy rolled the high game and series as Ravenna (11-4, 4-3 PTC Metro) topped the Rockets at Bill White's Twin Star Lanes.

Lovejoy bowled a 236, starting the first game with five strikes, on his way to a two-game 418 set. James Bender also topped the 400 series mark, finishing with a 405 series that included a 223 game.

For the Rockets (0-9, 0-5), Tyler Fleming tossed a 181 game and a 343 series.

BOYS BASKETBALL

COVENTRY 73, CANTON HERITAGE CHRISTIAN 46

The host Comets raced out to a 24-9 first-quarter lead and cruised to a non-league win over the Conquerors on Tuesday.

A total of 11 players broke into the scoring column for Coventry, led by Jimmy Holmgren with 16 points. Bryce Hargrove and Luke Bogdonavich added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Comets.

Derek McNutt had a game-high 17 points to lead Heritage Christian, while Austin Caldwell (15) and Nathan Martin (13) also hit double figures for the Conquerors.

TRACK AND FIELD

A group of Portage Trail Conference track and field standouts enjoyed strong performances at the Kent State University High School Track Meet held last weekend.

Leading all athletes were Crestwood's Matt Monroe and Rootstow's David Paliscak.

Monroe, a senior, placed first overall in the 25-pound weight throw, with a long of 62 feet, 10 inches.

Paliscak, also a senior, topped all competitors in the shot put, throwing a long of 55 feet, 11 inches. Monroe was the runner-up in the shot put (53-9).

Girls shot put: Sophomore Edie Svonavec, Garfield, 2nd place (40-8); Senior Dawn Freeland, Rootstown, 6th place (35-8); Eighth grader Lauren Jones, Garfield, 7th place (34-7); Senior Bree Miller, Garfield, 15th place (29-4); Junior Abigail Hahn, Garfield, 16th place (28-5); Freshman Megan Ryser, Garfield, 28th place (22-0).

Boys shot put: Senior David Paliscak, Rootstown, 1st place (55-11); Senior Matt Monroe, Crestwood, 2nd place (53-9); Sophomore Lane Hluch, Rootstown, 6th place (46-6); Senior Eric Stone, Southeast, 10th place (43-10).
