The Streetsboro Rockets were no match for Kent Roosevelt on Wednesday evening as the Rough Riders stormed to a 61-26 Portage Trail Conference Metro Division win.
The victory keeps Roosevelt's slim Metro Division title chances alive as the Rough Riders (10-6, 7-3 PTC Metro) are two games behind division leader Norton and a game behind Ravenna with two division games remaining.
"I think that we've really been coming together as a team lately," Roosevelt head coach Craig Foreman said of his team, now winners of five of their last six games. "We had a very good showing tonight and it was great to be able to play all 13 of our players and get them some confidence."
Roosevelt broke the game open in the second quarter, turning a 13-7 lead into a 32-12 halftime advantage.
Six different Roosevelt players scored during the second quarter, led by five points from junior guard Justina Fortson.
Senior forward Courtney Olesh also chipped in four of her team-high 14 points during the second quarter as the Rough Riders outscored Streetsboro, 19-5 in the eight minutes of play.
Roosevelt's defense played a major role in the win, holding the Rockets to single-digit offensive outputs in each of the fourth quarters.
"We started the game in a press and then we settled back into a zone tonight," Foreman said. "We eventually worked into a half-court man, but it seemed like we were having success with everything we were doing."
Streetsboro was shaken during the second period when senior captain Shannon Blondeaux hit the deck hard near the basket.
After a lenghty delay, Blondeaux was helped off of the court and would eventually be taken to the hospital to receive further medical attention.
Rockets head coach Allison Carey said Blondeaux's absence was a heavy blow to her team's psyche.
"When our girls see a senior captain like Shannon have to leave to go to the hospital, it's really difficult," Carey said. "Shannon is a major part of our team and her presence is definitely known when she's on the court."
Even at full strength, it would have been difficult for the Rockets to contend with Roosevelt's offensive play.
Eight different Roosevelt players scored in the winning effort, led by Olesh and Brianna Rock, who finished with 12 points. Olesh also led Roosevelt in rebounds with six as part of a 27-rebound team effort.
The Rough Riders only recorded one 3-pointer as most of their work was done around the basket and with short jumpers as nearly every shot Roosevelt took seemed like the correct decision.
"I was really happy with the way the girls distributed the ball tonight," Foreman said. "Everytime I thought that they might settle for a shot, they made that extra pass and got a better shot attempt."
Marra Woods led Streetsboro with six points in a losing effort. Woods also pulled down four rebounds for the Rockets.
