Record-Courier staff report
Kent will be one of four regional sites this weekend for the NWCA National Duals. In the opening round of the four-team dual tournament held Sunday at the M.A.C. Center, Kent State (9-5) will take on No. 1 Oklahoma State (13-0), while No. 18 Wisconsin (7-6) will battle No. 24 Northern Iowa (8-4). Both matches will start at 1 p.m.
Oklahoma State advanced to the NWCA Championship finals last season, falling to Minnesota 18-13. Since then the Cowboys have won 14 straight dual meets and placed sixth at last year's NCAA Championships. Oklahoma State is the first team since 2006 in any sport to compete on Kent State's campus while ranked No. 1.
Expected top matchups include Kent State senior Dustin Kilgore (34-0), ranked No. 1 at 197 pounds, against No. 9 Blake Rosholt (9-3); and KSU senior Casey Newburg (31-5), ranked 16th at 184, against No. 11 Chris Chionuma (19-6).
"It's an opportunity for our guys to wrestle the No. 1 team in the country on our campus," KSU head coach Jim Andrassy said. "For a program like ours, this doesn't happen very often. Our guys are excited, and we're trying to do everything we can to make this a great event."
The regional championship round will follow at 3 p.m. The winner advances to an eight-team championship dual tournament set for Feb. 22-23 at Minnesota.
